Fine garlands and latticework are piped onto the fondant in royal icing, as are delicate roses and bunches of grapes. A satin-and-lace ribbon visually anchors the cake to its simple stand. For piping how-tos, see page 222. After several hours of decorating, the finishing touches are applied by Martha and Wendy with big smiles. ";

tdy_080109_marthacakes[i-1].body = "<headline/><p>All tied up and ready to go, this lovely cake was influenced by boxes found in Ladur&#233;e, a Parisian tea salon and pastry shop. We tweaked their shape slightly and tried to match the pastel hues with color chips to use as a guide in tinting the fondant that covers the tiers. The box lids are the actual cake; the bottoms, also wrapped in fondant, are cake risers. The gold bands were painted on. To achieve a straight line, place a tier on a turntable; position the head of a thin brush on the tier and rotate the turntable, keeping the brush in place. Golden dots of royal icing edge each band. The whole package is tied together, just like the original inspiration, with a taffeta ribbon. ";

The scrollwork is best suited to a square cake because the flat surfaces display the repeating motif to greatest advantage. Wendy attaches the delicate flourishes to the cake by piping on dabs of royal icing. She always makes extra sets of scrollwork to allow for breakage.";
