Because he is not a shutdown corner who can be relied upon to simply suffocate the other team’s best receiver. He’s quick but doesn’t have great top-end speed. He is a playmaker. The attacking style of Jim Johnson’s defense and the fact Philly has a safety like Brian Dawkins playing in the secondary with Samuel combine to allow him to take risks and make plays on the ball. Things won’t be the same in Atlanta. First off, LT won’t be tenderizing the defense for three quarters. Secondly, the Falcons offensive line isn’t quite as good as San Diego’s. Thirdly, neither are the Falcons quarterbacks, tight ends and wide receivers. So Turner will take serious punishment. He did that damage playing defensive tackle in the Packers 4-3, now he’ll be playing defensive end in a 3-4. What’s the difference? Generally, the 3-4 is a less penetrating defense – defensive linemen hold the point of attack and allow linebackers to fill, fill, fill. If the defensive line gets upfield, creases are created and 1 or 2-yard runs become 5-yard runs. He’s a lunchpail guy and at 6-foot-4, 278 pounds he’s not big enough or fast enough to be more than that.
