1994 — At the age of 17, Miller finishes 17th in the Giant Slalom on Burke Mountain in Vermont.

In 1996, representatives for the ski manufacturer K2 advised Miller not to race in the company's first generation of side-cut skis. Miller, however, felt the skis would aid his reckless style despite the fact that they were made for recreational skiers. Miller was right on target. He won the Junior Olympics Super-G and giant slalom and finished second in the slalom. Shortly after, Miller placed third in the slalom at nationals and was added to the U.S. Ski Team.

There's no doubt that Miller's two silver medal performance at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City was his coming out party, but his 2005 overall World Cup victory qualifies as his defining moment, propelling him to the top of the skiing world.

Aside from teammate Daron Rahlves, Miller could face his stiffest competition from Austria's Herman Maier and Fritz Stobl and Norway's Kjetil Andre Aamodt.
Miller has had success at the Olympics, but Maier has something that Miller does not. A pair of gold medals the Austrian won at the 1998 Games.
Miller, the 2004-05 overall World Cup champion, and Maier, a three-time overall World Cup champion could face off in one of the most anticipated showdowns in Turin.
Miller's two silver medals at the 2002 Games came unconstested by Maier who missed the Olympics that year while recovering from injuries he suffered from a serious motorcycle accident.
The heated rivalry began last season when Miller edged out Maier for the overall title, and also got the best of him by winning two gold medals to Maier's one at the 2005 world championships.
Miller, however, has started to show signs of slowing down of late. He recently lost his World Cup points lead. He has wondered aloud how much motivation he has left and has been an advocate of relaxing doping rules at the Olympics.
It's hard to tell how Miller will fare in Turin, but one thing's for sure. He will risk everything in order to capture his first gold medal. But Miller knows as much as anyone else that his no-holds-barred style could also put him out of medal contention completely.

Miller suggests banning every drug or having athletes carry cards revealing what substances they’ve taken: “That would be a really cool solution because it would allow people to say, ‘OK, that guy’s a great athlete, but he clearly has no respect for his body,”’ Miller said. “And the coolest guys would be the guys who won but didn’t have anything on their card.”
