Most Promising Move: Acquiring Marcus Stroud from Jacksonville was an aggressive move by a team that is ready to contend. The stout defensive tackle must prove he’s healthy, but he could solve a long-time problem area for Buffalo.
Most Worrisome Move: Young quarterback Trent Edwards needs weapons desperately, but the best Buffalo could do was a second-round wide receiver, James Hardy. The team is asking too much from Edwards and Lee Evans.
Summer Job: Get Hardy ready to play, because the other wide receivers are limited. ";

Most Worrisome Move: New head coach John Harbaugh seems a tremendously nice man. Trouble is, at this juncture, the Ravens may need a jerk more than a decent, smart football guy. The team’s rudder needs to carefully removed from the grip of Ray Lewis. It happens. But can Harbaugh affect that necessary change?
Summer Job: Don’t give in to the rush to make Flacco the No. 1 coming out of training camp. He went to Dell... Uhhh... Where... he ain’t ready to face the Steelers. ";

Most Promising Move: The Texans made two intriguing additions at the draft – West Virginia running back Steve Slaton and Virginia Tech linebacker Xavier Adibi. Both could pay immediate dividends for Houston.
Most Worrisome Move: The knee injury that knocked Andre Johnson to the sidelines last season after Week 2 aggravated him enough to require surgery in May. That’s going to keep the Texans only elite offensive player on a limited workload into training camp.
Summer Job: Whatever momentum the Texans hoped to harness last year was undone by injuries on offense. Johnson, quarterback Matt Schaub and running back Ahman Green all were rendered useless for stretches. Green’s only played 25 games in the past three seasons. They need to get and keep that offensive Big (relatively speaking) 3 healthy. ";

Most Promising Move: A simple trip to the doctor by Jay Cutler outshined any acquisition. Cutler’s diabetes diagnosis first looked like a setback, but their franchise quarterback can now treat the problem and prevent the drastic weight loss he suffered last year. He’s showed toughness in handling the situation, both last season and this offseason.
Most Worrisome Move: The Broncos ignored fixing their defensive problems early in the draft, and they are expecting low-level free agent signings to solve their shortcomings defending the run (Marquand Manuel, Niko Koutouvides, Boss Bailey). That approach has burned them in the past.
Summer Job: Settle on a starting running back. Denver’s vaunted running game has taken a hit recently, and the in-house candidates to carry the torch have a lot of question marks. ";

Most Promising Move: Bringing in GM Jeff Ireland and Grand Tuna Bill Parcells was the story of Miami’s offseason. Their acquisitions weren’t flashy, but they upgraded the toughness and size of the whole roster.
Most Worrisome Move: The Dolphins could use a steady veteran hand at quarterback to help guide their young gunslingers. Instead they got scatter-brained and scatter-armed Josh McCown, a walking example in how not to stay poised in the pocket.
Summer Job: Get all their defensive parts in place. There are a lot of moving parts on defense as they integrate a new system with a slew of new players.";

Most Worrisome Move: Where do you want to begin? To their credit, they haven’t craved to Chad Johnson’s efforts to shoot his way out of town but what will they get from him? The Bengals also lost three key defensive players in free agency – safety Madieu Williams, defensive end Justin Smith and linebacker Landon Johnson. They were almost idle in the free agent-import department.
Summer Job: Weather the storm that is going to be Ocho-Cinco as he trends closer to T.O. circa 2005-’06 status.";

Most Worrisome Move: Uncertainty. Head coach Tony Dungy creeps ever closer to retirement every offseason. Marvin Harrison had a balky knee ruin his 2007 season and now questions about Philadelphia gunplay swirl around him. The Colts dropped another home playoff game last year, this one to the Chargers. It’s the fifth time in their last eight playoff appearances they’ve been one and done. Where are their heads at entering 2008?
Summer Job: Getting their heads right for 2008. ";

Most Promising Move: Fifth overall pick defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey is a true franchise player. That’s a good thing because the Chiefs dealt their previous one (Jared Allen) and the cupboard is mostly bare.
Most Worrisome Move: Kansas City’s offensive line was among the worst in football last year, and first-round pick Branden Albert can’t solve it alone. Kansas City made surprisingly few moves up front and Brodie Croyle will suffer for it.
Summer Job: Create an NFL-ready offense. Croyle is the key, but Kansas City’s problems extend to wide receiver and the offensive line. ";

Most Worrisome Move: Bill Belichick can make chicken salad of a foul-looking secondary, but this will be his toughest task yet. With Asante Samuel gone, New England only brought in a second-round rookie and retread veterans to replace him. The Colts must be salivating.
Summer Job: Lighten the mood. The Patriots remain loaded on offense and have a generous schedule, but they must get over the most devastating loss in recent sports history. There are already signs Belichick is attacking this offseason with more joy (seriously) to combat the hangover. ";

Most Promising News: A terrific job in free agency by the Browns who signed former Pats receiver Donte Stallworth, swung a trade for Lions DT Shaun Rogers and then got former Packers DT Corey Williams as a restricted free agent. They also took care of their own, reupping quarterback Derek Anderson and running back Jamal Lewis.
Most Worrisome News: Because of deals made this year and last, the Browns didn’t make a selection until the second day of the draft (Beau Bell, ILB from UNLV in the third round). That’s a mild drain on a club but certainly not a devastator. Also, the Browns already lost corner Daven Holly for 2008 to a blown knee. He was competing for a starting job.
Summer Jobs: Don’t get caught up in the Brady-Anderson QB Drama (starring former Orioles outfielder Brady Anderson). Stay on top of the diet of Shaun Rogers so that he turns into the beast he ought to be.";

Most Promising News: The Jags sold out on the defensive side of the ball on draft weekend. They traded up to No. 8 to get defensive end Derrick Harvey from Florida then took Quentin Groves, an Auburn DE with their second-round pick. When the Colts are unseated in the AFC South, it won’t be because somebody has a superior offense. It will be done with defense.
Most Worrisome News: DT Marcus Stroud and WR Ernest Wilford have gone to Buffalo and the Dolphins respectively. Meanwhile, backup quarterback Quinn Gray went to Houston. Wilford’s loss could be most significant. He was tough, big and steady and the receivers imported – Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson – don’t have impressive recent resumes.
Summer Jobs: Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is new to the staff, replacing the mild-mannered, well-respected Mike Smith. It will be vital for Williams to make the transition smooth. ";

Most Worrisome Move: Oakland is paying Javon Walker nearly as much as New England is paying Randy Moss. It’s uncertain if Walker’s chronically injured knees will allow him to be a decent starter, much less a number one receiver.
Summer Job: Turn JaMarcus Russell into a composed starting quarterback. The Raiders dodged problems by holding on to coach Lane Kiffin for another season. Kiffin will provide stability and teach him the finer points of his West Coast offense. ";

Most Promising Move: The riskiest move New York made in an offseason full of them was trading for DT Kris Jenkins from Carolina. We think it will pay off; quality defensive tackles are nearly impossible to find and Jenkins can be dominant when motivated.
Most Worrisome Move: Right tackle Damien Woody was one of the biggest free agent busts of the decade in Detroit. The Jets rewarded him with another huge contract.
Summer Job: Decide if Kellen Clemens is their future. We have our doubts, and Chad Pennington gives them a better chance to win in the present.";

Most Promising Move: The drafting of Texas wideout Limas Sweed in the second round could be a boon for Ben Roethlisberger who agitated (inappropriately) for taller receivers in the offseason. Sweed had Top-15 talent but was held back his senior year by a wrist injury.
Most Worrisome Move: The flight of Alan Faneca. The decorated and popular offensive guard went to the Jets in free agency. He leaves a void on the line and in the locker room. The same goes for Clark Haggans, a productive linebacker for the Steelers who signed with the Cardinals.
Summer Job: Figure out whether they want Willie Parker and first-round pick Rashard Mendenhall to be a one-two backfield punch splitting the 25-30 carries a game that the Steelers figure to have available or whether Parker will remain a skinny bell-cow back for Pittsburgh.";

Most Promising Move: Adam Jones is now a headache for Jerry Jones (no relation).
Most Worrisome Move: The Titans continue to make puzzling decisions at running back and drafting the fleet (4.29) Chris Johnson with the 24th overall pick is the latest. He’s smallish, not physical and may not be able to withstand NFL pounding. Not far behind is Tennessee’s insistence on signing low-tier wideouts. Mike Williams, Justin McCareins and Justin Gage are at the top of the wideout food chain. Yeesh.
Summer Job: The Titans had some talent depart on defense between Travis LaBoy and Antwan Odom. It’s imperative they get those players replaced and make sure the defense is as nasty as ever or it will be a looooong season.";

Most Promising Move: In San Diego, it’s all about stability. The Chargers saw few players come and go this offseason because they already have a young core group of players signed long-term.
Most Worrisome Move: The Chargers continue to trade multiple draft picks away for mid-round picks. They want hard after Jacob Hester, who will be asked to convert from fullback to tailback, replacing Michael Turner.
Summer Job: Get everyone healthy! Antonio Gates is a long way from recovered from foot surgery and Philip Rivers may not be the same player so soon after ACL surgery. Center Nick Hardwick also could miss the start of the season.";

Most Promising Move: Jerry Jones knows how to open his wallet and keep his top players far from free agency. The recent extensions to keep Terence Newman and Marion Barber in the fold are forward thinking. The two franchise pillars will earn top dollars, but they would make far more if they hit the open market next year.
Worst Move: We’re still waiting for that “Wow.” Rookie Felix Jones should be a nice complement to Barber, but he was taken high for a projected role player.
Summer Job: The Cowboys are still missing a true second receiver behind fledgling actor Terrell Owens, who turns 35 this season. They need to develop another weapon in case Terry Glenn can’t get healthy enough to contribute. Youngsters Miles Austin, Sam Hurd, and Isaiah Stanbeck have some promise. ";

Most Promising News: The Bears were able to re-sign linebacker Lance Briggs and defensive end Alex Brown. They also acquired wideout Marty Booker in free agency. Personnel-wise, they have one of the best defenses in the NFC.
Most Worrisome News: There’s cause for nail-chewing on three fronts. Quarterback, where Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton will duel to be the uninspiring leader of the Bears offense. Running back, where underachieving Cedric Benson is still the starter. And linebacker where MLB Brian Urlacher is in a money snit.
Summer Jobs: Figure out a way to appease Urlacher without agitating the rest of the Bears mercurial linebackers. Rig the quarterback competition so that Orton wins and Grossman winds up holding the clipboard. And get No. 1 pick Chris Williams in the groove at left tackle so that John Tait can stay where he’s already one of the best – right tackle. Find the right balance in the offensive scheme that will reduce pressure on the talented defense.

Capitalizing on the thirst Atlanta – and the national media – seem to have for the Falcons rebirth under good-guy coach Mike Smith and young GM Tom Dimitroff.";

Most Promising Move: Turning down numerous trade offers for Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin was a sign that the Bidwells are no longer afraid of paying big contracts. Now that Fitzgerald signed his monster deal, though, Boldin is next in line.
Worst Move: Arizona drastically overpaid for an injury-prone pass rusher Travis LaBoy, who was a major disappointment in Tennessee. Now LaBoy will have to change positions and produce, something he never did with the Titans.
Summer Job: Arizona has to fix their running attack. They are supposed to be a power running team, and improved production on the ground would take pressure off shaky starting quarterback Matt Leinart. But Edgerrin James is calcifying and the Cardinals didn’t upgrade his backup situation unless they hit on fifth-round pick Tim Hightower. ";

Most Promising Move: Jeremy Shockey wanted to leave, but holding on to him was the best decision New York made all offseason. Shockey is still in his prime, and remains one of the most complete tight ends in the league. He’s worth putting up with.
Worst Move: By all accounts, David Carr is a nice guy; he’s just not cut out to face an NFL pass rush. New York’s time and money would be better spent elsewhere as they search for a backup quarterback. God help Carr if he gets to play, because the New York media will permanently damage him more than all those sacks.
Summer Job: Find something, anything to make this team angry. The Giants know well about the thin line between also-ran and Champion. If the Giants start believing their press clippings, they could suffer a swift decline in a tough division.";

Most Promising Move: Yes, he’s an offensive mastermind, but offensive coordinator Mike Martz was a bad fit in Detroit. Now that he’s out of the Motor City and out in San Francisco, maybe the offense can improve and – maybe again – backup quarterback Drew Stanton can show enough to supplant starter Jon Kitna who is not the long-term answer if these Lions are going to improve under Rod Marinelli.
Most Worrisome Move: The Lions offensive line was simply bad in 2007. The addition of first-round pick Gosder Cherilus isn’t enough to offset that group’s overall ineffectiveness.
Summer Job: Infuse this team with some confidence after a demoralizing end to the 2007 season. Sort out whether or not Tatum Bell is the starting running back. Figure a way to get Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams – two Pro Bowl caliber wideouts – to be consistent contributors. ";

Most Promising News: The Panthers had what appeared to be a pretty good draft. They got running back Jonathan Stewart out of Oregon and Pitt offensive tackle Jeff Otah in the first round then came back in the third round with Penn State linebacker Dan Connor and Iowa corner Charles Godfrey. Looks like some good pieces to build around.
Most Worrisome News: The Panthers lost Keary Colbert and Drew Carter from the wide receiver spot, Mike Wahle, Kris Jenkins and Dan Morgan are all out the door as well. Meanwhile, Jake Delhomme is 33 and played just three games last season.
Summer Jobs: The sand is almost out of the hourglass for head coach John Fox who is living off the 2003 season in which Carolina went to the Super Bowl. Overall, the team is 51-45 in Fox’ tenure and there’s a stale feeling that has to be remedied sooner or there will be no later.";

Most Promising Move: Scott Linehan has often looked in over his head as a leader, so picking up experienced coordinator Al Saunders to run the offense should help. Saunders’ system is familiar to players like Marc Bulger and Torry Holt.
Most Worrisome Move: Taking Donnie Avery as the first receiver in the draft was a head-scratcher. He’s a track guy playing football, and the Rams need immediate production with Isaac Bruce gone.
Summer Job: The Rams need to get Marc Bulger confident in the pocket again by stabilizing their offensive line. Their total collapse last year had him playing scared by season’s end. Keeping Orlando Pace healthy is job one.";

Most Promising Move: The Eagles quietly set up Asante Samuel’s contract so that he’d be very easy to cut after two seasons if he’s underperforming. That will keep Samuel motivated in a deep secondary that still includes Lito Sheppard. There is no such thing as having too many good cornerbacks.
Worst Move: We don’t fault Philly for trying their best to get a top receiver like Randy Moss and falling short. Or trading out of the first round. We do fault them for expecting journeyman pass rusher Chris Clemons to make a big impact.
Summer Job: Figure out how to score. The Eagles were a good red zone offense away from contending for the Super Bowl last year. A healthier L.J. Smith and fully recovered Donovan McNabb should help.";

Most Promising Move: The retirement of Brett Favre allows for the ascension of Aaron Rodgers to the starting role. He served the appropriate apprenticeship. He observed one of the great quarterbacks of all time and had ample opportunity to see what works and what doesn’t at the position. So that and the news about the kid in Connecticut who took off his Favre jersey after wearing it four years straight are the upside.
Most Worrisome Move: Well, even though it wasn’t necessarily the Packers’ “move” this has to be Favre too. A legend retires an impact is felt. The storyline to the entire Packers season is going to be Favre-related. Succeed and the story is how well the Packers play post-Favre. Struggle and there will be the inevitable “Lost without Brett...” coverage.
Summer Job: Forge a new identity. The Packers have a lot of talented pieces in place. Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson form one of the best coach/GM tandems. They should continue to flourish but must tread carefully between showing respect for one of their greats while beginning a new chapter. ";

Most Promising Move: Nice job raiding the AFC East for defensive help. Linebacker Jonathan Vilma came over from the Jets and corner Randall Gay comes from the Patriots. Meanwhile, defensive end Bobby McCray was signed away from Jacksonville. Then the Saints got USC defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis in the first round of the draft.
Most Worrisome Move: And only minimally worrisome – talented center Jeff Faine goes to Tampa Bay.
Summer Job: The Saints secondary – which struggled mightily at times in 2007 – needs to be better from the start in 2008. It took them too long last year to gel. The additions of McCray, Ellis and Vilma to the front-seven should help the backside of the defense.";

Most Promising Move: Hiring Mike Martz will breathe life into one of the worst passing attacks in recent NFL history. Alex Smith is still young and his intelligence is a great fit for Martz’s attack.
Most Worrisome Move: 49ers defensive end Justin Smith is a good player who is getting paid to be great. The 49ers have a recent history of overpaying in free agency (Nate Clements, Jonas Jennings) instead of developing their own draft picks.
Summer Job: Get everyone on the same page offensively. The 49ers have to juggle a quarterback competition, brand new starting receivers, and have their veterans learn the most complex offense in the league. There will be rough patches. ";

Most Promising Move: The Vikings did a nice job of shoring things up defensively in the offseason. They added defensive end Jared Allen from Kansas City, Derrick Pope (LB, Miami) and Madieu Williams (S, Bengals). They also signed Bears wide receiver Bernard Berrian and quarterback Gus Frerotte to back up Tarvaris Jackson.
Most Worrisome Move: Center Matt Birk is agitating for a raise and is the completment of Frerotte and rookie John David Booty enough ammo if Jackson falls flat?
Summer Job: Continue to prop up the confidence of Jackson who is entering a critical season in his development. It’s imperative that Jackson, Berrian, Sidney Rice, Bobby Wade and Robert Ferguson spend time together in the spring and summer so they can hit the ground running and make the Minnesota passing attack as worthy of respect as the Vikes rushing attack is.";

Most Worrisome Move: Not appeasing quarterback Jeff Garcia. He’s the only thing separating this team from 6-10 and – quite likely – saving Jon Gruden’s job. Is he old and noodle-armed? Yes. But he delivers wins.
Summer Job: Get a deal done with Garcia. Don’t make things more complicated than they have to be.";

Most Promising Move: The Seahawks have lacked a consistent tight end throughout the Mike Holmgren era. Second-round pick John Carlson, one of the best values in the entire NFL Draft, should solve those problems until well after Holmgren is gone.
Most Worrisome Move: Cutting Shaun Alexander was a good start, but Seattle didn’t solve their mediocre running game by signing veterans that no one else wanted. Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett will need a great offensive line to be average. The moves didn’t make sense considering the deep class of rookies available.
Summer Job: Find some young receivers to emerge. With Deion Branch likely out half the season and Bobby Engram best used in a slot role, Seattle must figure out who will rise up from a promising group of unknowns. The locals seem to prefer Logan Payne and Courtney Taylor.";
