Last season, Painter often relied on a three- or four-guard lineup and went without a post-up player. The only true center option for Painter is JaJuan Johnson, a 6-10 sophomore who could change the complexion of this team if he becomes more of an inside presence. The loss of swingman Scott Martin, who transferred to Notre Dame, hurts the overall depth.

The unknown: Last season’s success began and ended with defense, so Painter must find a way to keep the pressure and intensity at that level or higher. Freshmen John Hart, Lewis Jackson and Ryne Smith should bolster a talented perimeter unit. ";

UCLA may be a Final Four contender again, but as long as Tim Floyd is coaching USC the Trojans will recruit top players – such as freshman DeMar DeRozan - and battle for the Pac-10 title. Junior Taj Gibson hasn’t gotten enough credit for the role he has played in revitalizing USC. Gibson joins point guard Daniel Hackett and guard Dwight Lewis to form the returning nucleus.

The bad: Gone are two talented freshmen – O.J. Mayo and Davon Jefferson – who combined to scored almost 33 points a game for the Trojans. They will be missed on the court but Mayo’s departure will eliminate many of the off-court distractions. And that is a good thing for USC.

The unknown: Forward Alex Stephenson transferred from North Carolina to USC, but Floyd said recently he doesn’t think the NCAA will grant an appeal that would have made Stephenson eligible this season. Swingman Marcus Simmons will miss the first two weeks of the season after ankle surgery. ";

Coach Bill Self has surrounded them with an outstanding recruiting class, but KU essentially is starting over.

The bad: Mario Chalmers and other heroes from the championship team are gone. Inexperience will be the biggest obstacle to overcome but Kansas got an early start with a three-game exhibition trip to Canada in September. Self said the extra practices were a big help.

The unknown: Kansas is waiting for Collins to emerge as a leader, on and off the floor. Shooting guard Mario Little, named Big 12 preseason newcomer of the year, is being asked to replace many of the missing points. Coach Jay Wright has several interchangeable parts and returns every key player, including guards Scottie Reynolds and Corey Fisher, forward Dwayne Anderson, and big men Dante Cunningham and Casiem Drummond.

The bad: No one relies on one player to do more than Villanova does with Reynolds. He can take over a game, especially when he has the ball in his hand, but he’s really more of a shooting guard. Fisher needs to improve his shooting and increase his point production to relieve some of the pressure on Reynolds.

The unknown: Like so many teams in the rugged Big East, Villanova runs the risk of getting beaten up during conference play. But the Bears often came up short on the defensive end and settled for trading baskets. That’s not a successful formula, especially in a competitive conference such as the Big 12. Improved defense is a must.

The unknown: Drew brought in a recruiting class that includes forwards Anthony Jones and Artem Valov.
