They add to the pomp and circumstance, but it takes much more for two teams truly to be called rivals.
It takes h-e-a-t, or its anagram h-a-t-e. Any way you spell it, a rivalry must have long-term intensity.
It needs Matt Doherty being caught on camera calling the Duke cheerleaders \"the ugliest in the ACC\" in his first game at Durham as coach of North Carolina.
Or a coach referred to by fans as \"Traitor Rick,\" even though Louisville’s Pitino is the man who restored Kentucky to national prominence in the '90s.
It's when a whole state clamors to hate you, according to an SI.com poll of Missourians who hate Kansas more than the Cubs and Raiders.
It's clear when fights have broken out after games or coaches have refused to shake hands afterwards in a city rivalry that may be more heated than any other. And of course it needs elite basketball programs so that something besides bragging rights is at stake every time the teams meet.";

spt_bkc_rivalries[i-1].body = "<headline/>
This might be the greatest rivalry in all sports, not just college basketball. As Mike Krzyzewski once said about the uniqueness of the two school's geography, “Forget the Big Ten ... we share the same dry cleaners ... There is no other area like this. It produces things, situations, feelings that you can’t talk to other people about. Because they have no understanding of it.”
TV analyst Dick Vitale often talks about why Duke-Carolina is No. 1. As he told NBCSports.com, “Because of the great tradition of both schools, the fact that they are about eight miles apart, the great basketball environment on both campuses and the fact that every game is meaningful in their own conference and on the national scene.”
Carolina holds a 128-97 advantage in the competition that has been an annual event since 1920 -- but Duke has won 17 of the past 24 games. Both teams are among the sport’s most accomplished, too. Duke has won three NCAA titles and been in 14 Final Fours. North Carolina has won four national championships and appeared in 17 Final Fours.
Like in any great rivalry, the players understand how important the game are. Former Tar Heels center Brendan Haywood remarked, “I don't want to share the ACC title with anybody — especially Duke.”
And with former Kansas coach Roy Williams — a Tar Heel graduate and former assistant — taking over UNC before the 2003-04 season, the series took on a renewed vigor with Carolina’s national resurgence. Williams' record against Duke as UNC coach is 5-5.";

spt_bkc_rivalries[i-1].body = "<headline/>
So many games, so little cyberspace. There’s three games long-time observers usually talk about, last year's instant classic and this year's bloody finish.
In the 1984 ACC tournament semifinals, Mike Krzyzewski finally established himself as an ACC presence, guiding Duke to a 77-75 victory over a team that featured Michael Jordan, Brad Daugherty, Sam Perkins, Kenny Smith and Matt Doherty.
Before that, Carolina laid claim to a double-overtime thriller, winning a ’74 regular season game, 96-92.
In 1995, Krzyzewski was out for the season with back problems and Duke struggled to a 13-18 season. But the Blue Devils pushed the Tar Heels to double overtime before falling, 102-100.
In Williams’ first rivalry game during the 2003-04 season, the Tar Heels had No. 1 Duke on the ropes, but Chris Duhon drove the length of the floor in the final seconds for an 83-81 overtime victory.
North Carolina provided a game that their fans could finally rave about after recent struggles. Ranked No. 2 in the 2004-05 ACC regular-season finale, the Heels needed to beat the Devils to clinch their first outright title since 1993. They got it once freshman Marvin Williams converted a three-point play in the final seconds of a 75-73 win.
In 2006, North Carolina swept Duke for the first time since 1995. But the second meeting provided the memorable moment with 14.5 seconds left when Tar Heels forward Tyler Hansbrough leaped for a layup. After the ball left his hand, he was struck in the face by Gerald Henderson’s right elbow.
Hansbrough crumpled to the ground, his nose bleeding onto the floor and down his face, before he jumped to his feet menacingly and had to be restrained from Duke’s players while he was taken to the locker room. The officials reviewed the play and ejected Henderson, then later said in a joint statement that under NCAA rules he would be suspended for one game.";

But as Louisville, under Denny Crum, surpassed the Wildcats in the 1980s in becoming a national power, it was inevitable that the rivalry would be renewed. The NCAA Tournament seeding committee fired the first shot, setting it up so that the schools met for the first time in 24 years in 1983. spt_bkc_rivalries[i-1].body = "<headline/>
There’s a series of rivalries that flared recently like Duke-Maryland, Florida-Kentucky and UCLA-Arizona.
And geography and burning desire makes up for the up-and-down fortunes of these schools’ rivalries: Iowa-Iowa State, Michigan-Michigan State, Stanford-California, Penn-Princeton and Oklahoma-Oklahoma State.
Philadelphia’s Big 5 — first formed in 1954 — is a rivalry unto itself and one of the most entertaining. It has renewed its round-robin series that was halted for several years because of conference affiliations and NCAA rules that caused scheduling gridlock, so recognition should be given to Villanova, Temple, St. Joseph’s, Penn and LaSalle.
But there’s another budding rivalry in the Big East that has provided some of best games of the past five years: Connecticut vs. Pittsburgh.
Fans and players don’t really hate each other, but the level of play in their games has thrusted this to the forefront. The 2003-04 Big East title game, which the Huskies won, 61-58 after the Panthers took the regular-season title, is a great example.
With star Emeka Okafor hobbled by back spasms, guard Ben Gordon hit the game-winner and set the Big East Tournament scoring record in the process. Oh yeah, it was the third straight time they’d played for the title. It was the fourth straight final for the Panthers and the eighth in 10 years for Connecticut.
More impressive?
Pitt joined Connecticut (1994-96) as the only team to win or share a Big East regular-season title in three straight seasons. The Big East played in divisions from 1995-98 and 2001-03 and thus didn’t have a single champion those seasons.
They haven't played in a Big East title game since, but both are among the nation's Top 10 teams again this year, which always makes for great basketball between these two.";
