That's true of Davis ever since he was an assistant on Sid Gillman’s San Diego Chargers staff, and it’s how he became managing general partner of the Raiders. Davis was such a gladiator in his early years, that the other AFL owners made him commissioner of their league when it was at the height of its war with the NFL. There are those who thought that if the two leagues hadn’t merged, the aggressive Davis would have led the AFL to a thorough victory.
The difference is that Davis was an effective leader in the '60’s, '70’s and '80’s, but he has been largely ineffective for the better part of the last two decades. ";
