That would explain dumping promising power forward Charlie Villanueva to get speed in the backcourt with T.J. But they forgot how to play smothering defense, and as a result were upended by Miami. And now they’ve lost more of their defensive identity by letting Ben Wallace go to Chicago. Under Flip Saunders, the Pistons are putting more emphasis on the offensive end in an attempt to attain more balance. They threw a scare into the Pistons in the 2006 playoffs, and now their confidence is high. Also, they signed LeBron James to a contract extension, so the feeling around the franchise is positive. Having a superstar who can take over games and who excels under pressure is huge. However, the Cavs did little to really improve, so they’ll have to raise their level of play next season if they expect to gain the conference finals. And they desperately need to re-sign Drew Gooden. Shannon Brown and Daniel Gibson both are promising rookies, but they probably won’t make much of a difference next season. He will greatly improve their defense and rebounding. They really don’t have much scoring in the middle, but they have plenty of it elsewhere. Defense wins championships, and although the Bulls probably aren’t quite ready to challenge for a berth in the NBA Finals, they will be a handful for any team in the East that gets in their way. Of course, this could be a team weighed down by expectations early next season, so don’t expect them to come together until about halfway through, around December or January. The Pacers added youth and athleticism with the additions of Marquis Daniels and rookies Shawne Williams and James White, which should aid in Rick Carlisle’s defensive-minded approach. But Kobe Bryant is a superstar, Lamar Odom and Kwame Brown woke up and played excellent basketball over the last month of the season, and the Lakers suddenly got an infusion of confidence. Yet the Spurs find themselves as potential fossils in an increasingly competitive West. Tim Duncan needs to come off his subpar season (due to injury) with an MVP-like campaign. The Mavs gained incredibly valuable experience with that postseason charge. They really don’t need much to return, other than a determination to attack the hoop and pick up fouls rather than settling for jump shots. Also, they got the better end of the deal that brought Shane Battier, a solid and reliable forward, in exchange for the talented but erratic Stromile Swift and rookie Rudy Gay.
