After too many failed attempts of win-now free-agent spending, the new man in charge – Andy MacPhail -- is trying a different approach. He is looking to trade high-priced veteran position players for young talent. The next two to go could be left-handed ace Erik Bedard and All-Star second baseman Brian Roberts. The O's and Mariners reportedly are about to consummate a deal that would bring top outfield prospect Adam Jones and solid left-handed reliever George Sherrill to Baltimore along with two prospects. Roberts also could go to the Cubs for more young talent. The first to go was All-Star Miguel Tejada – a move that was long overdue -- to the Astros for a package of more quantity than quality, but some usable players for manager Dave Trembley in 2008. Luke Scott fits in left field, Matt Albers and Troy Patton could win back-of-the-rotation or middle-relief spots, and Dennis Sarfate could be in the setup reliever mix. But for now, Tejada’s departure leaves only Luis Hernandez and Brandon Fahey at shortstop, so another move could be made there. With Chris Ray and Danys Baez out for much of 2008, the bullpen needs help. Setup man Greg Aquino was claimed on waivers from Milwaukee, and reliever Randor Bierd was selected in the Rule 5 draft. Corey Patterson could be re-signed if Jones isn't obtained from Seattle. Outfielder Chris Roberson was acquired from Philadelphia for cash considerations. Outfielder Jeff Fiorentino was claimed on waivers by Cincinnati.";

But that didn’t stopped them from entering the Johan Santana sweepstakes, reportedly with separate offers centered on Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury. But they wouldn't budge off those offers, and Minnesota turned instead to the Mets. A handful of teams have expressed interest in Coco Crisp, who lost his job to Ellsbury, but could start in many places. The only significant addition is expected to be veteran first baseman Sean Casey, who reportedly has signed a deal that will be announced if he passes a physical. Casey figures to replace Eric Hinske on the roster. Curt Schilling will return for another – and possibly final – season after agreeing to a one-year deal. And so will World Series MVP Mike Lowell, who hit .376 at Fenway Park and realized there is no better place for him to be, so he signed a three-year deal even though he was looking for four years. Veteran setup man Mike Timlin signed a one-year deal, and so has Doug Mirabelli to return as the backup for Jason Varitek. Fourth outfielder/DH Bobby Kielty also could be back, especially if Crisp is dealt, but Eric Gagne has moved on to Milwaukee after his disastrous short stay in Boston. Veterans Dan Kolb and Dan Miceli have signed, and will be bullpen options. Contract options were picked up on Tim Wakefield and Julian Tavarez, but the latter could go in a deal. So GM Brian Cashman got his way, and the trio of top pitching prospects remains in place, as does Robinson Cano, who could sign a long-term deal. There also were talks with the Giants regarding a potential Hideki Matsui-for-relievers deal, but those ended. Andy Pettitte will return for at least one more season, rejoining Chein-Ming Wang, Mike Mussina, Hughes and Kennedy in the current projected rotation, but that might not be enough to advance deep into October unless one of the young starters breaks through to stardom. Also staying put is Alex Rodriguez, but only because nobody else offered anything remotely close to the $275 million the Yankees will pay him. A renegotiation could have been handled far more cleanly and efficiently on both sides. They also have given Jorge Posada four years and $52 million – at least one year too many for a 36-year-old catcher, albeit one coming off a career offensive year. After some hesitation, Mariano Rivera accepted a three-year deal to stay put, and should finish his career as a Yankee. They dealt Tyler Clippard for promising right-handed reliever Jonathan Albaladejo, and also signed veteran middle reliever LaTroy Hawkins to a one-year deal. But Luis Vizcaino has agreed to a deal with Colorado, in effect bringing about a Hawkins-for-Vizcaino swap. Backup catcher Jose Molina re-signed for two years. Morgan Ensberg and Jason Lane signed one-year deals, and will be thrown into the first-base mix that no longer includes Andy Phillips, who signed with Cincinnati.";

The bad news is that will push it to only about $40 million, a joke considering the division they play in. But the Devil-less Rays are making a strong attempt to improve this off-season, led by the six-player deal that brought young No. 3 starter Matt Garza and the shortstop they were seeking in Jason Bartlett. The cost was steep – emerging star Delmon Young – as well as Brendan Harris and a pitching prospect. But at least the Rays were dealing from a position of strength, as they still have Carl Crawford, B.J. Upton and Rocco Baldelli in their outfield (assuming the latter is healthy). They also dealt troubled Elijah Dukes to Washington for a pitching prospect in an addition-by-subtraction move, and signed veteran left-handed bat Cliff Floyd, who fits as a right-field option and platoon DH with Jonny Gomes. Veteran Troy Percival, who successfully came out of retirement last season, signed a two-year deal to be the closer and reunite with Joe Maddon. The Rays also wisely exercised a $2.3-million option on Al Reyes, but they still need more bullpen help -- – particularly a left-hander -- as last year’s relievers posted an astonishingly bad combined 6.16 ERA. Right-handed sinkerballer Scott Munter, who pitched with the Giants last season, could win a spot. No. 2 starter James Shields agreed to a guaranteed four-year deal that could stretch as long as seven years if options are picked up. Akinori Iwamura will move to second base, and a spring decision will be made on top prospect Evan Longoria, but he will move in at third base at some point in 2008. In the meantime, Willy Aybar, acquired from Atlanta for prospect Jeff Ridgway, is the fallback option at third base. OF John Rodriguez was signed after being released by St. Louis, and veteran lefty Brian Anderson will be given a chance to win a spot after missing two seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery. OF Chris Snelling was sent to Philadelphia and RHP Brian Stokes to the Mets, both for cash considerations. They also picked reliever Tim Lahey first overall in the Rule 5 draft and traded him to the Cubs for cash.";

They assume three years and $33 million left on Rolen’s deal, while subtracting two years and $24.5 million for Glaus. The best thing that could happen to the Jays this winter is for their long list of walking wounded – Vernon Wells, B.J. Ryan, Gustavo Chacin, Reed Johnson, etc. – to get healthy. Because with the roster they anticipated a year ago, plus a new left side of the infield, the Jays could make noise, even in the AL East. Their other big move is signing spunky overachiever David Eckstein to play shortstop and hit leadoff. The Jays also considered a deal that would have sent Alex Rios to San Francisco for Tim Lincecum, but the Giants chose to sign Aaron Rowand instead. Valuable veteran bat Matt Stairs has re-signed, and with him and Johnson back, it’s likely that top prospect Adam Lind could begin next season in the minors. Solid backup infielder Marco Scutaro was acquired for two Class A pitching prospects, and with John McDonald returning to a backup middle-infield role, the Jays’ infield is deep. Versatile Buck Coates was acquired from Cincinnati, and could win a bench spot. With two young catchers close to the big leagues, they were looking for a one-year solution to pair with Gregg Zaun, and settled on Rod Barajas after Paul LoDuca signed with Washington. Sal Fasano also was re-signed as insurance. Lefty reliever John Parrish was signed after not being offered a contract by Seattle. They unsuccessfully tried to trade Josh Towers before not offering him a contract, making him a free agent, and he signed with Colorado. Middle infielder Rey Olmedo was claimed on waivers by Pittsburgh. Reliever Randy Wells was selected in the Rule 5 draft. ";

But even with their moves, they still appear to be no better than the third-best team in the division. The latest was acquiring Nick Swisher from the A’s for outfielder Ryan Sweeney, and pitching prospects Gio Gonzalez and Fausto De Los Santos. The change in home ballparks will help Swisher, who is an on-base machine despite a low batting average and comes with a reasonable contract. He will settle in left or center field, as speculation about Paul Konerko possibly being dealt has died. The Sox and Angels reportedly talked about a Konerko deal, but nothing materialized. The Sox and Angels did work another deal earlier this winter, exchanging right-hander Jon Garland and Gold Glove-winning shortstop Orlando Cabrera. That came despite the Sox already having picked up Juan Uribe’s $4.4-million option -- and Uribe remains expendable unless he can beat out Danny Richar in a second-base battle this spring. You also can throw Alexei Ramirez into that mix, as he is a middle infielder/outfielder who played for Cuba in the World Baseball Classic. They recognized the glaring need for setup help in front of Bobby Jenks, but overspent by giving veteran right-hander Scott Linebrink a four-year, $19-million deal. And they are taking a two-year, $11-million risk on Octavio Dotel, who hasn’t been healthy in three years. Carlos Quentin was acquired from Arizona for minor-league first baseman Chris Carter, and he could be the regular left fielder if his recovery from shoulder surgery goes smoothly. The Sox also have two quality third basemen in Joe Crede and Josh Fields, so look for one to be dealt -- but probably not until spring training, when teams can gauge Crede’s comeback from back surgery, which reportedly is going well.";

They were, however, looking into trading for Oakland ace Dan Haren, with the A’s reportedly having interest in Asdrubal Cabrera, whom the Indians wouldn’t deal. As much as the Tribe liked to see Johan Santana leave the division, his new contract could mean the departure next winter of free-agent-to-be C.C. Sabathia. They signed Japanese League veteran closer Masahide Kobayashi to a two-year, $6.25-million deal as a setup man and insurance for closer Joe Borowski. They also have acquired underrated backup infielder Jamey Carroll from Colorado for a player to be named. That could signal the departure of Josh Barfield, who lost the second base job to Cabrera last season. Cliff Lee has a fairly big contract, but is talented enough that somebody might take a gamble on him coming off a bad year. There were discussions with Pittsburgh about left fielder Jason Bay, as that was a position of offensive weakness for the Tribe last season. But nothing is expected to materialize, as Shapiro has said he doesn't feel the need to respond to what the Tigers have done this off-season. They certainly don’t figure to be dealing top prospect Adam Miller, who could win a rotation spot. Prospects Matt Whitney and Brian Barton were lost in the Rule 5 draft. The cost is potentially stripping the farm system short-term – particularly with the losses of Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin. Not to mention a payroll increase to around $130 million in 2008. But the reward is dramatically improving chances for their veteran-filled roster to win a World Series title that eluded them in 2006. Remember, owner Mike Ilitch is 78, Kenny Rogers is 43, Todd Jones is 40, Gary Sheffield is 39 and Ivan Rodriguez is 36, so this is a team that wants and needs to win now. And after their 2007 second-half collapse that cost them a playoff spot, something dramatic was needed. The moves have created a scary lineup that health permitting, should lead the majors in runs scored – plus a rotation that goes five-deep in quality, including three left-handers in a park that sets up well for them. The only remaining hole is in the setup crew in front of Jones, as Joel Zumaya’s shoulder surgery could cost him most of next season. They do have a solid bargaining chips remaining in Brandon Inge and Marcus Thames, so it should come as no surprise if one is dealt for relief help. So far, nothing has worked out with Inge, so for the time being, he will stay put and fill a utility role. But look for him to move before the start of the season. Veteran Sean Casey, displaced by Carlos Guillen's move to first base, is expected to sign with Boston. They re-signed veteran outfielder Timo Perez and lefty reliever Tim Byrdak, but didn’t offer Chad Durbin a contract, and he signed with Philadelphia. Maybe Guillen will stay in place and be productive in his ninth spot in 12 big-league seasons. And the Royals sure needed more power, as only Alex Gordon reached the 20-homer mark in 2007. In fact, the Royals also tried to sign Andruw Jones, who preferred to stay in the National League. But they decided not to offer a contract to Emil Brown, who has led them in RBI the last three seasons, as they feel Brown no longer fits in an outfield of Guillen, David DeJesus, Mark Teahen, Joey Gathright and possibly Damon Hollins. Brown signed with Oakland. There is a slim chance Mike Sweeney will be back as the DH, but it’s more likely he will move on. They had about $20 million to spend with free-agents coming off the payroll, and besides the deals for Guillen and lefty reliever Ron Mahay (two years, $8 million), they signed Japanese League veteran reliever Yasuhiko Yabuta, and veteran right-hander Brett Tomko. They also reportedly talked to the White Sox about Paul Konerko despite the 2007 emergence of Casey Kotchman. So for time being, they still possess young talents Howie Kendrick, Ervin Santana, Reggie Willits, Jeff Mathis, Nick Adenhart, Joe Saunders and Brandon Wood – all whose names reportedly were involved in trade talks. The other area in question is the left side of the infield. Do they stick with the current combination of talented-but-inexperienced Erick Aybar at shortstop and Chone Figgins at third (with Garret Anderson and Vlad Guerrero splitting time at DH)? Or do they add a Khalil Greene, Joe Crede or Brandon Inge to the mix, and surrender some of that young talent? The Angels spent $90 million over five years on center fielder Torii Hunter, who will displace Matthews – last winter’s mistake signing – to corner outfield duty. That will make their offense and defense better, although Hunter won’t add much in terms of on-base percentage to a free-swinging lineup. The Jon Garland-for-Orlando Cabrera deal gives them six quality big-league starters, and even though they already have one of the league’s best bullpens, they could add a reliever. They remain far apart with closer Frankie Rodriguez, and appear headed to arbitration. They didn’t tender a contract to Dallas McPherson – once tabbed as their third baseman of the future – and he signed with Florida. Hector Carrasco signed with Pittsburgh.";

That followed Nick Swisher going to the White Sox for outfielder Ryan Sweeney and pitching prospects Gio Gonzalez and Fausto De Los Santos. The latter is the potential sleeper in the deal -- a power pitcher with a mid-90s fastball. And that swap came after the much-speculated-about Dan Haren deal that officially signaled Beane’s shift in strategy that should pay off when the A’s move into their new stadium in a couple of years. Haren went to Arizona for six prospects led by highly regarded OF Carlos Gonzalez. Lefty Dana Eveland has a bit of big-league experience and could win a spot on the 2008 staff, which for now is headed by Joe Blanton. But Blanton also could be traded, as could Huston Street and most anybody else, as Beane has given up on contending with a roster that has injury question marks in Rich Harden, Eric Chavez, Bobby Crosby, Justin Duchscherer and Chad Gaudin. Chavez, for instance, has undergone three surgeries since last season – back and both shoulders. But he is expected to be healthy for 2008. A farm system that stopped producing as it had in the recent past was the other big part of Beane’s decision making, and the 14 young players has added this winter will go along way to restocking the organization. Emil Brown, let go by Kansas City, signed a one-year deal and likely will start in left field. Kirk Saarloos has signed a one-year deal, and could win a rotation spot. The M's are expected to send top outfield prospect Adam Jones, solid lefty reliever George Sherrill and two prospects to the O's. Brad Wilkerson has been signed and has the inside track on the right-field job in the wake of the departures of Jones and Jose Guillen, who got a questionable three-year, $36-million deal from Kansas City. Rookie Wladimir Balentien also could get playing time in right. After losing out to the Dodgers on Japanese League right-hander Hiroki Kuroda, the M’s quickly snagged Silva with a four-year, $48-million deal. With his reliance on a sinking fastball and a move off the turf in Minnesota to spacious Safeco Field, Silva could have a big 2008 season. They also selected knuckle-baller R.A. Dickey in the Rule 5 draft, and he will get a shot at a rotation spot. Brandon Morrow also could make the move from the bullpen to the rotation, but if not, would fit into the mix in front of dominating closer J.J. Putz. Veterans Chris Reitsma and Arthur Rhodes were re-signed, and also could be part of Putz's setup crew. But lefty John Parrish wasn't offered a contract, and signed elsewhere. The cost wasn’t much -- promising Edinson Volquez, who was projected as a back-of-the-rotation starter in 2008. Right-hander Jason Jennings, coming off an injury-marred season, has signed a one-year deal and will fill a rotation spot and likely resuscitate his career. The Hamilton trade and the signing of Milton Bradley to a one-year deal appear to settle the outfield situation. Bradley will play right if he recovers from knee surgery quickly enough, with Nelson Cruz as the fallback plan, and Marlon Byrd in left. Frank Catalanotto figures to be the primary DH against right-handed pitching, unless Bradley has to DH for awhile as his knee recovers. That left no room for Sammy Sosa, as he wanted $7 million to return, and that wasn’t going to happen at that price. Brad Wilkerson signed with Seattle after Ben Broussard was acquired from the Mariners for second base prospect Tug Hulett. To bolster the bullpen, they gave Japanese League veteran Kazuo Fukumori a two-year, $3-million deal, and will give Eddie Guardado a chance to bounce back after missing most of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery. They also re-signed right-hander Jamey Wright, and made offers to Eric Gagne and LaTroy Hawkins, but both signed elsewhere. Akinori Otsuka wasn’t tendered a contract after missing the second half of last season, and is a free agent. Gerald Laird is out of a starting job, but he could bring something of value in return if they decide to deal him. ";

It is one thing to tear down a veteran roster after winning a World Series (see post-1997 and 2003). But by dealing Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit, they gave up a 24-year-old mega-bat who is two years from free agency, and a left-hander who will turn 26 next month with a 68-54 career record, albeit coming off a sub-par year. It’s really time for Commissioner Bud Selig to step in and impel change in this franchise, as operating on a less-than-$20-million budget is inexcusable. And while we’re on the subject, the idea of building a new stadium on the Orange Bowl site rather than on the water in downtown Miami would be another in a long line of mistakes for this franchise. In Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin, they have acquired two of arguably the best 10 young talents in the game, although the latter looked a bit overmatched in his short big-league stay last season. He could fill a major hole in center field, Miller almost certainly will be in the rotation, and Mike Rabelo figures to platoon with Matt Treanor, as Miguel Olivo wasn’t offered a contract and signed with Kansas City. Cabrera’s departure opens a humongous hole at third that could be filled by Jose Castillo, who lost his second base job in Pittsburgh, or injury-prone Dallas McPherson, who was let go by the Angels. They also signed Jorge Cantu, who was released by Cincinnati. They also have signed 42-year-old Luis Gonzalez as a backup corner outfielder and left-handed bat off the bench. With Willis gone, veteran lefty Mark Hendrickson has been signed, but the staff ace could turn out to be Sergio Mitre or Scott Olsen. Before that deal was reached with Minnesota, they reportedly were close to signing Livan Hernandez. But that possibility has cooled, replaced by signing Kyle Lohse, which would deepen a rotation that desperately needed help. They appeared to have a three-year deal with catcher Yorvit Torrealba, but abruptly backed out at the last minute and decided to send setup man Guillermo Mota to Milwaukee for Johnny Estrada. Then they turned around and sent top bargaining chip Lastings Milledge to Washington for catcher Brian Schneider and right fielder Ryan Church -- both of whom will be in the Opening Day lineup. Backup catcher Ramon Castro also was re-signed, so with Estrada not being tendered a contract, the Estrada-Mota deal in essence was a dump of Mota’s salary. Free agent Paul LoDuca signed with Washington, and Tom Glavine turned down a $13-million option and signed with Atlanta. He is a nice upgrade over the 2007 combination of Wes Helms, Greg Dobbs and Abraham Nunez. They also struck quickly and effectively by getting closer Brad Lidge from Houston for three replaceable parts – speedy outfielder Michael Bourn, middle reliever Geoff Geary and a third-base prospect. That corrects a wrong with the move of Brett Myers back to the rotation where he belongs. With the Giants spending $60 million to sign away Rowand, the Phils gave veteran left-handed hitter Geoff Jenkins a two-year deal, and he will platoon in right field with Jayson Werth. Shane Victorino will play center, and So Taguchi, signed after being let go by St. Louis, figures to be the fifth outfielder. Right-hander Chad Durbin – no relation to new teammate J.D. Show him a young talent with a lot of tools but some baggage to go with them, and Bowden pounces. This winter, Bowden followed the pattern twice, acquiring outfielders Lastings Milledge and Elijah Dukes in separate deals. The promising Milledge, who has displayed some hot-dogging tendencies in his young big-league career, cost the Nats catcher Brian Schneider and outfielder Ryan Church. Dukes, whose checkered history dates back to high school, came from Tampa for minor-league left-hander Glenn Gibson. That leaves a deep outfield of Wily Mo Pena (another Bowden project), Milledge and Austin Kearns, with Dukes and Ryan Langerhans, Willie Harris, Rob Mackowiak and Rule 5 pick Garrett Guzman as possible reserves. They thought they plugged the catching hole with the signing of Paul LoDuca to a one-year deal, in effect making the Nats-Mets swap a Milledge-and-LoDuca for Schneider-and-Church proposition. But with LoDuca undergoing knee surgery that could cost him a month, Johnny Estrada also has been signed. Aaron Boone was signed as a corner infield reserve, which will make it tough for Rule 5 draft pick Matt Whitney to stick. Starting pitching remains a potential problem area, but Bowden prefers younger arms to free agents. To that end, right-hander Tyler Clippard, acquired for promising reliever Jonathan Albaladejo, will get a shot at a rotation spot. Look for another move for a young starter, or perhaps a veteran back-of-the-rotation type. The Nats could part with Dmitri Young if Nick Johnson proves he is healthy in spring training. Felipe Lopez also could be expendable, so the Nats have quality parts to deal. Veteran lefty Ray King signed a one-year deal. ";

You’re not hearing much anymore about the possibility of Ken Griffey Jr. being traded, and it isn’t going to happen with Baker taking over. Instead, Hamilton’s departure sets up a center-field competition between Bruce, Ryan Freel and Norris Hopper. 1B Andy Phillips was signed after being released by the Yankees, and backup catcher Paul Bako also has been signed. Eddie Guardado signed with Texas and Kirk Saarloos signed with Oakland. ";

The rotation still is far short of playoff caliber, which makes taking on big position-player contracts a bit puzzling. And so was not re-signed Jason Jennings, who signed with Texas. The biggest acquisition is shortstop Miguel Tejada, who has begun to decline and is facing potential legal troubles, for five young players who are more quantity than quality at this point – outfielder Luke Scott, starting pitchers Matt Albers and Troy Patton, reliever Dennis Sarfate, and third base prospect Mike Costanzo. Closer Jose Valverde is the other big addition, coming from Arizona for Chad Qualls, Chris Burke and a pitching prospect. Burke’s departure was expected after they gave 2B Kazuo Matsui a questionable three-year, $16.5-million deal to replace Craig Biggio at second base and hit second. Matsui has speed and is a good defender, but is 32 and hasn’t proven he can stay healthy. Tejada’s arrival signaled the departure of Adam Everett, who wasn’t tendered a contract and signed with Minnesota. The consensus opinion is that they pulled the trigger too early and didn’t get enough for Brad Lidge. Considering the dearth of available quality relievers, you’d think they could have got more than Michael Bourn – whom they plan to hit leadoff and play center field -- and middle reliever Geoff Geary. They re-signed Brad Ausmus to platoon with young J.R. Towles, whom they hope will provide offense. Setting up a solid bench, versatile veteran Geoff Blum signed a one-year deal, as did 1B/OF Darin Erstad, and Mark Loretta accepted arbitration. They also acquired setup man Oscar Villareal from the Braves for center-field prospect Josh Anderson, signed right-handers Doug Brocail, Jack Cassel and Chad Paronto, and picked lefty Wesley Wright in the Rule 5 draft.";

Bill Hall will move for the second time in two years, this time to third base, and Ryan Braun will shift to left field, where the Brewers are hoping his defense isn’t so much of an issue. GM Doug Melvin also has taken several steps to restock the bullpen after the departures of free agents Francisco Cordero and Scott Linebrink. The last one brought likely closer Eric Gagne, who got a one-year, $10-million deal – along with the taint of the Mitchell investigation. Quality setup man David Riske received $13 million over three years, and two pitching prospects were dealt to Pittsburgh for enigmatic Salomon Torres, who is coming off a down year. Those moves followed a deal that sent Johnny Estrada to the Mets for Guillermo Mota -- all which should give manager Ned Yost some solid options along with Derrick Turnbow. In place of Estrada -- whom they weren’t happy with either offensively or defensively – they have signed veteran Jason Kendall. His leadership skills are great, but they likely will be even less happy with his bat and inability to throw out runners. Eric Munson also has been signed. They also have signed capable backup infielder Abraham Nunez and 32-year-old Gabe Kapler, who wants to play again after managing in the minors last season. They declined a $9-million option on longtime Brewer Geoff Jenkins, and he signed with Philadelphia. Kevin Mench and Matt Wise were designated for assignment, the latter signing with the Mets, and health question marks Tony Graffanino and Corey Koskie aren’t expected to be re-signed.";

Sounds like a broken record when it comes to this franchise, doesn’t it? The trade market is their best hope for improvement, and they have had discussions about Jason Bay, Nate McLouth, Damaso Marte and John Grabow, among others. But there was no match with San Diego for Bay after the Padres dealt for Jim Edmonds, and no match with Detroit for Brandon Inge. So the Bucs essentially are the same team that lost 94 games a year ago, and in fact, have lost more than they have gained in relatively minor activity so far this off-season. They are looking for a veteran right-handed reliever or two, and to that end, have signed Hector Carrasco and Jaret Wright. They dealt disgruntled reliever Salomon Torres to Milwaukee for two pitching prospects, didn’t pick up Cesar Izturis’s option and saw him sign with St. Louis, released Jose Castillo and Josh Phelps, and are expected to lose free agents Shawn Chacon and Tony Armas Jr. On the plus side, they picked right-hander Evan Meek in the Rule 5 draft, signed backup infielders Chris Gomez and Rey Olmedo, and claimed infielder Josh Wilson and pitchers Ty Taubenheim, Phil Dumatrait and Jimmy Barthmeier on waivers. They have starting pitching to deal, and if they really want to get adventurous, could pull the trigger on a Bay trade. So maybe new GM Neal Huntington will make something happen at some point. But for now, it’s the same old Bucs, different winter – with the hopes of improvement mostly coming from within.";

And sure enough, Rolen has been sent to Toronto for Troy Glaus, saving the Cards about $8.5 million. That makes three key members of the 2006 World Series title team to depart in a winter of change that also has seen longtime assistant John Mozeliak replace Walt Jocketty as the general manager. Jim Edmonds was sent along with cash to San Diego for third base prospect David Freese – a clear signal the Cards believe Edmonds is near the end and the arrival of top prospect Colby Rasmus will occur in 2008. David Eckstein’s departure was a given after the Cards signed free agent Cesar Izturis, whose option wasn’t picked up by Pittsburgh, and Eckstein signed a one-year deal with Toronto. Even after giving Joel Pineiro a two-year, $13-million deal, the Cards still need another starting pitcher, as the comebacks of Chris Carpenter and Mark Mulder are uncertain. Carpenter is expected to be out until mid-season, and Mulder could open the season in the rotation, but his days as a front-line starter likely are in the past. Matt Clement has been signed, and will get a chance to rebound after missing 2007 due to surgery. Kip Wells signed with Colorado, and Anthony Reyes probably would benefit from a change of scene. Veteran Jason Larue has signed to be Yadier Molina’s backup, and Josh Phelps has signed to be a right-handed bat off the bench. John Rodriguez was designated for assignment, and it’s so long to So Taguchi, who was released and signed with Philadelphia. In addition, Haren comes relatively cheaply contract-wise and is under control for three more years. The cost was a boatload of prospects the D-Backs can live without, including highly regarded outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, and first baseman Chris Carter, who had just come from the White Sox for Carlos Quentin. They also decided to deal Jose Valverde despite his league-leading save total, likely believing his value never will be higher. The return was quality setup man/closer candidate Chad Qualls and underachieving Chris Burke, who will win a bench job. The closer role will be determined in spring training, with Brandon Lyon likely getting the job over Tony Pena and Qualls. They were in the running for Japanese League veteran Hiroki Kuroda, who signed with the Dodgers, and still could add another back-of-the-rotation type, as Randy Johnson remains a question mark – although he appears to be on track to start the 2008 season. Billy Buckner – the pitcher, not the infamous first baseman – also could get a shot at the No. 5 spot after being acquired for versatile Alberto Callaspo. You would think a team that finished last in the league in batting average and on-base percentage would be looking to upgrade offensively, but that’s not the case here. Instead, they expect improvement from young nucleus members Stephen Drew, Chris Young, Mark Reynolds, Conor Jackson and Justin Upton. And in fact, they felt they could do without Quentin, who lost his job to Upton, and was sent the White Sox. Free agent Tony Clark is expected to sign elsewhere. Chad Tracy lost his job to Reynolds, and isn’t expected to be ready at the start of spring training, as he is recovering from knee surgery and a blood clot.";

It’s hard to blame them for losing Kazuo Matsui, who received a risky three-year, $16.5-million deal from Houston. They had set their sights on free agents Tadahito Iguchi and David Eckstein to replace Matsui, but both signed elsewhere, and now have turned to fading Marcus Giles. But there are a handful of decent in-house possibilities in Jayson Nix, Clint Barmes, Jeff Baker and Ian Stewart. There reportedly was interest in former closer Brian Fuentes, who lost the role to Manuel Corpas last season, but nothing has materialized to date. Fuentes could bring a starting pitcher or another reliever in return, and signing free-agent setup man Luis Vizcaino to a two-year deal could facilitate Fuentes’ departure. They also held onto veteran setup man Matt Herges with a two-year deal. Just when it appeared as if Yorvit Torrealba was headed to the Mets, they backed off a potential three-year deal and traded for Johnny Estrada. So Torrealba is back in purple pinstripes after signing a two-deal worth about $7 million. Underrated backup infielder Jamey Carroll was dealt to Cleveland for a player to be named, and they swapped relievers with Detroit – Jose Capellan coming for Denny Bautista. LaTroy Hawkins signed with the Yankees, Jeremy Affeldt signed with Cincinnati and Jorge Julio with Cleveland, and Josh Fogg is looking for a three-year deal and will sign elsewhere. That’s why Kip Wells and Josh Towers have been signed to one-year deals, and Mark Redman was re-signed.";

That gives Torre a formidable rotation of Brad Penny, Derek Lowe, Chad Billingsley, Kuroda and Jason Schmidt (health permitting) or Esteban Loaiza. The Andruw Jones signing also was a good one in that he is tied up for only two years, didn’t cost any prospects, and has something to prove. Jones pushes Juan Pierre to left field, unless they can find someone to take the $35 million remaining on his contract. More likely is a deal involving Andre Ethier, as they would prefer not to trade highly talented Matt Kemp – a move they could regret for a decade if he fulfills his potential. They didn’t pursue Alex Rodriguez or Torii Hunter, and quickly shied away from the asking price for Johan Santana and Miguel Cabrera despite having quality young talent to offer in Billingsley, Clayton Kershaw, Andy LaRoche, Ethier and Kemp. Third base is the other remaining question mark. Nomar Garciaparra needs to either be dealt or accept a reduced role, and LaRoche needs to be given an opportunity to play, or dealt. That’s what happens when two free agents – Mike Cameron and Milton Bradley – depart through free agency, and then efforts to sign Andruw Jones and Japanese League star Kosuke Fukudome fail. They also looked into deals for Luke Scott and Jason Bay, but in the latter case, the stumbling block appears to be the Pads’ unwillingness to give up third base prospect Chase Headley, who will be tried in the outfield this spring. At least ace Jake Peavy is locked up for awhile, as they gave him a three-year, $52-million extension, and they are close to a two-year deal with Khalil Greene. Tadahito Iguchi has signed a one-year deal to become the starting second baseman, pushing prospect Matt Antonelli back to the minors. Michael Barrett accepted arbitration and returns to platoon with Josh Bard behind the plate – unless Barrett is dealt. They are taking shots on Randy Wolf and Mark Prior at the back of the rotation, hoping at least one will contribute heavily. So after mulling the possibilities of trading Tim Lincecum for Alex Rios or a package of relievers for Hideki Matsui, they decided to overspend (five years, $60 million) to sign center fielder Aaron Rowand. This isn’t going to help the offense as much as they think, as Rowand has played in offensive parks his entire career, and now shifts to spacious AT&T Park. And it’s hard to imagine him producing enough in the final year of the deal. But he’s definitely an upgrade from their in-house options, and he pushes Dave Roberts and Rajai Davis to left field. The makeover in the post-Barry Bonds era is sure to continue with additional moves to address what could be the worst lineup in the majors. The need for a third baseman heads the list, as Pedro Feliz signed with Philadelphia after being unable to reach a deal to stay put, and at this point, veteran utility man Rich Aurilia is the best option. They wisely avoided Alex Rodriguez’s enormous financial demands, which would have set up a situation similar to his time in Texas – too much money going to one player, with a last-place team around him. A chronic problem of not producing position player prospects has dragged this team down. But at least they now seem willing to see what Dan Ortmeir, Kevin Frandsen, Davis, Nate Schierholtz and Fred Lewis can do. Reliever Scott Munter signed with Tampa Bay.";
