With two outs in the 12th, Pete Rose singled to centerfield off the Angels’ Clyde Wright. Dodgers infielder Billy Grabarkewitz followed with a base hit to left. The Cubs' Jim Hickman then singled up the middle. Centerfielder Amos Otis charged the ball and threw without hesitation to Cleveland catcher Ray Fosse. Rose, of course, never hesitated even though the throw had him beat. Instead of trying to touch a corner of the plate and sneaking past Fosse, Rose leveled him with a shoulder to the midsection. The blow separated the catcher from the ball and gave the NL the game. ";

New York Giants lefthander Carl Hubbell had the unenviable task of facing this devastating lineup, even with a lively fastball and notable screwball. After allowing the first two men to reach base, Hubbell struck out Ruth, Gehrig and Foxx to end the first inning. He followed that by striking out Simmons and Joe Cronin before Yankees catcher Bill Dickey singled. Hubbell easily fanned AL pitcher Lefty Gomez to close the inning. ";

The mighty Jackson unbuttoned his top button and rolled his neck when he stepped into the batter’s box. Ellis left a fastball high over the middle of the plate and Jackson swung for all he was worth. The richochted off the right field light tower, some 60 feet above the upper deck. NL manager Sparky Anderson said he nearly suffered whiplash as he turned his neck to watch the flight of the ball. ";

The summer of ’41 would be a legendary year for baseball -- Joe DiMaggio recorded his amazing 56-game hit streak and Ted Williams became the last player to hit .400, batting .406. However, the home run that Williams called the most meaningful of his career came in the bottom of the ninth of this game. With two outs, Williams strode to the plate with two runners on base and the AL trailing 5-4. Williams hit a slider from Cubs pitcher Claude Passeau into the right field seats for the game-winning homer. Williams whooped as he ran the bases in his home run trot and was mobbed at home plate by the gleeful American Leaguers and he got a big hug from DiMaggio, who was on base and scored one the play. The NL was more dynamic, led by Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente who were both five-tool players and was more willing to bring in African-American players. The AL was dependent on big, strong sluggers who lacked athleticism and relied on the long ball. Nevertheless, the AL brought a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning and sent in intimidating Red Sox reliever Dick Radatz, one of the game’s hardest throwers. But the NL quickly tied the game and put two runners on with two out when power-hitting outfielder Johnny Callison stepped up. The Phillies slugger timed a Radatz fastball perfectly and sent it screaming over the right field wall for a walk-off home run.";
