Nutt certainly kept Arkansas respectable – on the field.
He took the Razorbacks to two SEC title games, went 42-38 in SEC regular-season games and took the Hogs to bowls his first six seasons. Nutt went out on a high note, knocking off No. 1 LSU 50-48 in triple overtime. He resigned three days later.
Off the field his tenure unraveled amid the departure of key recruits, offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn resigning to take a job at Tulsa and a host of personal issues, topped when fans requested and received a copy of Nutt’s cell phone records through the Freedom of Information Act.
This was a situation that simply became untenable for all involved.

Hogs fans will look past Petrino’s distasteful exit from the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons because his teams will roll up 500 yards a game led by NFL-quality quarterbacks. Just like in his four years at Louisville, Arkansas will have one of the most explosive offenses in the nation.
While achieving the kind of success he did at Louisville in the SEC will be nearly impossible, Petrino’s presence and recruiting ability will certainly make the Razorbacks relevant.
Despite a somewhat seamy past, this was a great hire for Arkansas. But the question all Hogs fans are wondering: How long can this possibly last before Petrino’s wandering eye kicks in?
The good news is with just 11 starters back and installing a new offensive system, it may be a while.

Long-term outlook: Well let’s face it, \"long term\" and \"Bobby Petrino\" are words that don’t belong in the same sentence. Baylor has become the Black Hole of the Big 12 and Morriss was unable to change that reality. He finished with 12 straight Big 12 losses as the Bears are now at 12 straight losing seasons – and counting.
There were some positive developments, as Baylor beat two-time defending North Division champion Colorado in Morriss' conference debut in 2003. He also led Baylor to its first Big 12 road victory in 2005 at Iowa State. In 2006 the Bears won three Big 12 games in the same season for the first time.
But the Bears had 37 turnovers last season and their 33 conferences losses under Morriss were by an average margin of four touchdowns.

Briles revived a once-proud Houston program and is similar to Bobby Petrino, minus the baggage. Prior to his arrival, the Cougars had suffered 10 losing season in 12 years. Under Briles Houston had only one losing season.
A former assistant under Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, Briles knows how to create offense. His final two teams at Houston ranked among the top 10 in the nation in total yards per game.
On the flip side, Briles’ teams struggled defensively, ranking 72nd or worse in four of his five seasons. That won’t cut it in the Big 12.
2008 prediction: 4-8.
Long-term outlook: On the plus side Briles has spent his entire coaching career in Texas, 16 as a high school coach and three as an assistant at Texas Tech. Needless to say, he knows the territory. The question is can he get enough quality players to commit to Baylor to make a difference. Briles is the fifth coach to try and turn around a team that is the only Big 12 program without a bowl appearance since the conference’s inception in 1996. If he can turn this around, he’ll be a local hero but will probably be whisked away to a bigger and better job.";

Fairchild is a Colorado State graduate who spent eight years on Lubick’s staff before leaving for the Buffalo Bills, where he served as offensive coordinator.
With Fairchild calling the shots, the Rams set single-season school records in a number of categories, including for most points scored (442) and touchdowns (59). Three times under his watch, Colorado State produced the conference offensive player of the year.
Fairchild has 26 years coaching experience, including 19 at the college level. However, he has never been a head coach at any level.

Long-term outlook: While Fairchild’s name didn’t raise any eyebrows across the nation, the important thing to remember is he was a good hire for this program. The Rams’ accomplishments in his four years as offensive coordinator proves he knows what needs to be done to succeed at Colorado State. If he can handle the subtleties of being a head coach, the Rams could be on the rise again.";

Cutcliffe brings some name recognition to a program sorely in need of some.
In his six years at Ole Miss (1999-2004), he enjoyed reasonable success, albeit with the help of Eli Manning at quarterback. Still, Ole Miss’ top five single-season point totals came under his watch.
Yet while his work there was solid, the bottom line is he produced just one winning record in the SEC.
He comes to Duke after spending the past two seasons as offensive coordinator at Tennessee.
2008 prediction: 2-10.
Long-term outlook: Cutcliffe has never had a reputation as a solid recruiter, which you absolutely have to be at Duke. And at age 53, he’s going to need some hard-charging assistants from his staff to assist on that front. Even with his offensive prowess, he’s got to be able to recruit players who can be difference-makers in the ACC. His background as a solid quarterbacks coach – he helped coach Peyton Manning, Heath Shuler and Tee Martin in his first stint as a Tennessee assistant -- will help in that area. But that leaves a lot of other areas in which to attract quality athletes.";

According to athletic director Dan Radakovich, the program was not moving forward.
Gailey never won fewer than seven games in a season and the Yellow Jackets earned a bowl bid each year, the first Tech coach to achieve such an accomplishment. In ACC play, Gailey led the Yellow Jackets to 28 victories in 48 games and in 2006 led Tech to the ACC Championship Game, where it lost to Wake Forest.
During Gailey’s tenure, Georgia Tech defeated eight nationally ranked teams.
Either Tech believes it should run in the same company as Georgia or is sick and tired of being overshadowed by the Bulldogs. Either way, the bar has been raised.

Johnson will run the same triple option-based attack he did with wild success at 1-AA Georgia Southern and Navy. But this is the ACC, and if the option fails to reap benefits in a hurry, Johnson’s stay will be short.
After going 2-10 in his first year with the Midshipmen, Johnson’s teams went 43-19 over the next five, including a school record-tying 10 wins in 2004.
Prior to Johnson’s arrival, Navy had only two winning seasons in the previous 19 years.
2008 prediction: 7-5.
Long-term outlook: Can you get a fair share of blue-chip athletes to want to go to a school that runs the option? That’s the $64 question. And based on Gailey’s tenure, Johnson is not only going to have to win, but win big. Real big. Suffice it to say if Johnson struggles, the alumni will be looking for Johnson’s job as well as Radakovich’s.";

In a nine-year run, Jones redirected a Hawaii program that went from 18 consecutive losses to an undefeated regular season.
His teams won two WAC championships, went 4-2 in bowl games and last season’s squad earned a Sugar Bowl berth.
For all his winning, Jones was a beloved figure in Hawaii and his departure was not without controversy.
Jones reportedly was dismayed by a long list of requests for his staff and program that he says were rejected by athletic department officials through the years. Copies of those requests were attached to his resignation letter.
It was that perceived lack of commitment that led to Jones' decision to leave and try and resurrect SMU.

This will not be an enviable task for McMackin who will be replacing a local legend and has only eight returning starters to work with, along with a brand new offensive coordinator whose greatest accomplishments have been in high school.
Unlike Jones, McMackin’s background is steeped in defense.
He has plenty of experience, having served as Hawaii’s defensive coordinator in 1999 and 2007, with the Warriors capturing WAC titles in each season.
McMackin has also served two stints in the NFL with San Francisco and Seattle, and also worked at the collegiate level at Texas Tech, Miami, Florida, Navy and Utah. He gained a reputation as a top recruiter when in 2001 Rivals.com tabbed him as the best recruiter.
His forte has been taking suspect defenses and turning them around quickly. But his job is far bigger now.
2008 prediction: 6-7.
Long-term outlook: There are those who believe that with Jones gone, the demise of Hawaii football is inevitable. That’s impossible to say at this stage, but he proved he could recruit enough quality players to compete at a national level. If the Warriors continue to expect that kind of success, it likely won’t happen. But there’s no reason they can’t remain a solid, competitive program.";

This is Sumlin’s opportunity to make a name for himself. He comes from Oklahoma where he spent the past two seasons as an assistant, one year serving as co-offensive coordinator.
Prior to Oklahoma, Sumlin spent two years at Texas A&M, where during the 2002 season he was thrust into the offensive coordinator’s role and after taking over the Aggies averaged 33 points a game, compared to 16 points a game prior.
A former four-year letterman at Purdue, Sumlin also had stops at his alma mater, Minnesota and Wyoming.
He becomes the first Africa-American to lead the Houston program.

Long-term outlook: The good news for Sumlin is he doesn’t have to start from scratch, as former coach Art Briles left a solid foundation in place. That gives him a better than average chance to succeed. The rest will come down to recruiting – being the only black head coach among 1-A schools in Texas will help - and his ability to handle all the nuances that come with being a head coach for the first time.";

For those who believed Michigan football had become stale, it certainly won’t be that way any more. Rodriguez is one of the top offensive minds in the country and is the pioneer of the spread-option attack.
The Mountaineers ranked in the top 15 nationally in total offense the past two years and ranked in the top four in rushing offense the past four seasons. And he accomplished this without the kind of talent – none of his recruiting classes was ever ranked in the Top 20 in the country according to Rivals.com - that he will be able to attract at Michigan.
2008 prediction: 6-6.
Long-term outlook: It’s certainly much better than the short-term outlook, as Michigan returns just 10 starters while instituting new offensive and defensive schemes. But once Rodriguez gets rolling and brings in his kind of players, Michigan will once again be part of college football’s top echelon. And, oh by the way, be sure to beat Ohio State at least half the time.";

His work at Arkansas was impressive, winning three SEC West division titles. Nutt’s teams were always sound in the running game, leading the SEC in rushing in each of the past three seasons and produced a 1,000-yard rusher in five of the past six.
However, Nutt’s teams have never thrown the ball that well. Only four times in the past eight seasons has an Arkansas quarterback thrown for 250 yards or more.
Above all, the drama he helped create at Arkansas must not rear its ugly head at Ole Miss, or the result will be the same.

When the Huskers brought in Callahan, it was the idea he would arrest a sliding program. Instead, the slide accelerated during his tenure and one of the bullies of college football became a team that too often got pushed around.
Callahan’s teams were 15-18 against the Big 12, 0-7 against top-10 opponents and 3-10 against the Top 25. The Huskers were 0-17 in games they trailed at the half. Last season, they lost three home games for the first time since 1968 and allowed 40 points or more in six games for the first time. Pelini has made his mark as a defensive whiz and the way Nebraska has been pushed around of late, seems to be just what the ’Huskers needed.
In 2003, his Nebraska defense was ranked 11th in the nation in total defense, up from 55th the year before. At Oklahoma in 2004, his defense ranked 13th nationally as the Sooners advanced to the BCS title game. In his three seasons at LSU, each of his defenses finished third nationally.
If there’s a downside, aside from his one-game stint as interim Nebraska coach in the 2003 Alamo Bowl, he has no head coaching experience.

Long-term outlook: Callahan did a decent job recruiting according to services that judge the process, but either those players were not as good as advertised or Callahan and his staff did a poor job of developing them. The Nebraska name still holds plenty of cachet and Pelini should get his fair share of talent. What he and his staff does with it will go a long way in determining if he is successful. If he can get the ’Huskers to play defense like his LSU teams, Nebraska will be back in business.";

This is Kill’s first chance to run with the big boys, as he’s never coached at a higher level than I-AA. But he did a great job of building a Southern Illinois program that prior to his arrival had suffered nine straight losing seasons.
After starting slow, he went 50-14 in his final five seasons and that included five straight playoff berths. One thing that will work to his benefit is a loyal coaching staff. He was able to keep the staff intact in his stay at SIU and brought the entire staff with him to Northern Illinois.

Long-term outlook: Clearly the Huskies hope this will work out for them as well as Brian Kelly did for Central Michigan. Kelly was a big winner at Division II Grand Valley State before turning Central Michigan into a MAC power and is now at Cincinnati. Northern Illinois certainly has a lot more going for it, and if Kill can recruit as well at this level as he did 1-AA, the Huskies’ run of success should continue.";

One could suppose if Jones can win at Hawaii, he can win anywhere.
In a nine-year run, Jones redirected a Hawaii program that went from 18 consecutive losses to an undefeated regular season.
His teams won two WAC championships, went 4-2 in bowl games and last season’s squad earned a Sugar Bowl berth.
This is another huge rebuilding job, as the once-proud SMU program has never recovered since the NCAA handed down the death penalty in 1987.
The SMU administration has made a major commitment to upgrading the program, and this is certainly a big step in the right direction.

Long-term outlook: The first place the Mustangs should notice a difference is fan interest. They ranked 99th in the nation in attendance last season, averaging just 17,171 fans a game. Jones will certainly re-energize the fan base. The downer, to some degree, is if he becomes successful. For a higher-profile college job, or perhaps a return to the NFL, will certainly be made available to him.";

Fedora earned his stripes by becoming a skilled offensive coordinator. In the past two seasons at Oklahoma State, he produced two of the top offenses in school history. In 2006 the Cowboys ranked 16th nationally in total offense, averaging 409 yards and 35 points a game. Last season they ranked seventh in total offense, averaging 486 yards and 35 points a game.
Fedora is one of those guys who spends as much time on recruiting as he does breathing. To his credit, he came in talking a big game and then backed it up with the top-rated recruiting class in C-USA, topped by 5-star receiver DeAndre Brown, who reportedly turned down, among others, Tennessee, Miami, Fla., LSU and Florida.

Long-term outlook: Fedora will bring in more talent to Southern Miss and the Golden Eagles will continue to win and go to bowl games. The question is can he win big enough? If so, there will likely be more fans in the stands, which of course will make the AD very happy. Sherman benefits from having strong ties to the program – he served two stints there in 1989-93 and 95-96 – and served as the Aggies chief recruiter. Sherman, who served as offensive line coach, helped Texas A&M to three conference titles and compiled a 49-12-1 record in his tenure there.
Sherman also has vast NFL experience with Green Bay, Seattle and Houston. He has an excellent offensive mind and should bring some balance to an offense that had become one-dimensional.
His biggest challenge, aside from returning just 10 starters this season, is he hasn’t been involved in the college game for more than 10 years. And his time there was strictly as a position coach. He will have to prove a 53-year-old still has what it takes.

Long-term outlook: Sherman’s hire certainly turned no heads and probably left a few hanging. But he’s a solid football coach with an excellent resume who will certainly be able to turn around the program’s sagging fortunes. However if he does too good a job don’t be surprised to see him go back to the NFL if a head coaching job is offered, as he would like to show his dismissal from Green Bay was a bad decision.";

With city rival USC having all the success and getting all the attention, the Bruins made a somewhat risky hire of an alum who has shown he can win big at the national level but has also shown a propensity to get into trouble with the NCAA.
After he left Colorado, the program lost five scholarships for one season and was put on probation for two years for 51 rules violations.
While at Colorado and Washington, Neuheisel’s team won at least 10 games three times and finished in the top 10 three times. His teams went to seven bowl games and his winning percentage of .688 puts him among the top 20 active coaches in I-A with at least five years of experience.
He is a big name who brings instant credibility to a program longing to get back into the national spotlight. But it could be tough going early with only nine starters returning this season.

Wulff is a former Washington State offensive lineman who has spent his entire coaching career in the state.
He spent eight years as the head coach at Eastern Washington, where he went 53-40 with three trips to the I-AA playoffs in the past four years. His forte is offense, as his teams at Eastern Washington were consistently one of the top offenses in the nation.
Wulff is considered a no-nonsense guy, who should bring some toughness to the program. His red flag is that he has never coached in Division I-A.

Long-term outlook: Hard to say. Washington State is the toughest job in the Pac-10 and while Mike Price showed you can win there, the Cougars have never been able to do it on a consistent basis. Wulff will have far more demands on his time in the Pac-10, and that is one hurdle he will have to negotiate. If he can get the Cougars into a bowl game in the next couple of years, his term will be off to a good start.";

Stewart got the job on a permanent basis amid the euphoria of him leading the Mountaineers over Oklahoma 48-28 in the Fiesta Bowl.
