sequels_best_worst[i-1].body = "“Spider-Man” was a good movie and “Spider-Man 2” was great, so doesn’t it make sense that “Spider-Man 3” — opening May 4 — will become a classic? History indicates it probably won’t. While it’s common for a sequels to better the original, the third film in a series is almost always a letdown (see “The Godfather, Part III,” “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock,” “Jaws 3-D” ...). The best sequels feature the return of popular characters, a good story and entertainment value that exceeds what came before it. The worst sequels, however, come in all shapes and sizes. Only films that had at least marginal expectations were included. (In case you’re wondering why “SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2” didn’t make the list.)";

The post-apocalyptic drama had a storyline you could fit on a cocktail napkin, but plenty of action — culminating with one of the most exciting chase scenes of all time. The visuals were incredible, combining old school methods such as puppetry and stop-motion animation with newer innovations in special effects. But the force was strongest with screenwriters Leigh Brackett (who died before the movie was made) and Lawrence Kasdan and director Irvin Kershner.
