The hiring occurs despite a petition signed by about 100 Texas Tech faculty members opposing the move. Knight promises that his Red Raiders players will be expected to adhere to high academic standards. He also pledges $10,000 to the school library with a promise of more to come, and said that the Texas Tech faithful would enjoy teams that play hard and smart.  <br><li>Knight signs a five-year, $1.25 million contract, and, with incentives, his salary will be boosted to $400,000 a year. The deal includes a minimum of $500,000 in guaranteed outside income, including speaking engagements and shoe and radio deals.  <br><li>In Knight's first season at Texas Tech (2001-02), he takes a team that finished the previous season 9-19 and guides it to a 23-9 record and NCAA Tournament berth.   <br><li>The Red Raiders lose to Southern Illinois in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  <br><li>In September of 2002, Knight undergoes successful surgery for an intestinal obstruction related to scar tissue within the abdomen.  <br><li>Also in September, Knight and his attorney agree to a $25,000 settlement with former assistant Ron Felling for shoving Felling while at Indiana.<p><font class=headline>2002-03</font><p><li>Knight wins his 800th career game, a 75-49 win over Nebraska in early February. He became just the fourth Division I coach to reach the historic mark.<br><li>Despite having one of the Big 12's premier players in Andre Emmett, the Red Raiders have an up-and-down season, finishing 22-13 and reach the NIT semifinals.</ul> ";

knight_timeline[i-1].body = "<font class=headline>2003-2004</font>  <br><ul><li>Texas Tech begins the season with aspirations of making the NCAA Tournament after an NIT berth last season.<br><li>On Feb. 2, 2004 almost two months after berating an ESPN reporter during an interview with Iowa coach Steve Alford, Knight has a public argument with Texas Tech chancellor David Smith at a Lubbock restaurant after the chancellor tells him 'Bob, you've been doing a really good job lately.' Initial reports had the coach tossing his salad and yelling at the chancellor, then following him into the parking lot, berating him.<br><li>One day later, Knight tells the school's board of regents his side of the story and is only reprimanded for the incident.<br>In his version of the spat, Knight said Smith followed him to the side of the salad bar and said, &#147;You&#146;ve got issues. What are they?&#148;<br>Knight, recalling the incident at a press conference said: \"Right there, I think I was at fault. I should have just shook my head, walked away, done other things. . . . I absolutely did not instigate anything.\"<br>The Red Raiders responded to their coach's non-suspension by beating Baylor, 83-63 that night.<br><li>The Red Raiders, again led by All-Big 12 forward Andre Emmett, reached the NCAA Tournament where Knight won his first tournament game at Texas Tech.<br><li>Tech lost in the next round to top-seeded St. Joseph's and finished the year 23-11. Emmett finished his career as the Big 12's all-time leading scorer and the 13th player under Knight to earn All-America honors. <br><li>Knight talks with CBS in late August about developing a sitcom based on his life. The talks don't produce a show.<p><font class=headline>2004-2005</font><p><li>Knight begins the season with 832 wins, less than 50 wins from Dean Smith Divsion I record.<br><li>March 2: Knight wins his 850th game, beating Baylor, 72-66, in Lubbock.<br><li>Texas Tech beat in-state rival Texas for the first time under Knight, a 69-65 victory in Lubbock on Feb. 22.<br><li>Knight's squad stuns top-seeded Oklahoma in the Big 12 Tournament and advance to the title game for the first time in school history. It is the school's first appearance in any title game since the Southwest Conference final in 1996.<br><li>The Red Raiders lose to Oklahoma State in the Big 12 title game, 72-68, but later receive a 6 seed for the NCAA Tournament.<br><li>March 19: After an opening-round win over UCLA, the Red Raiders upset 3 seed Gonzaga. All-League guard Roger Ross scores 24 points and sends Knight to his first Sweet 16 since 1994 when he was with Indiana.<br><li>March 25: The Red Raiders fall to tournament Cinderella West Virginia, 65-60. Knight's squad finishes the season 23-11.<br><li>TV talks produce a show this time in August, as Knight agrees to air \"Knight School\" on ESPN. The reality TV show will give one Texas Tech student the chance to make the Red Raiders as a walk-on and will air in February, 2006.<p><font class=headline>2005-2006</font><p><li>Sept. 30: Texas Tech announces Knight's son, Pat, will succeed him at the school when Knight retires.
