For many people, conversations about great World War II games start – and end – with Activision’s “Call of Duty” series. The franchise is full of games with great storylines and realistic period-correct weapons (though the latest version, “Call of Duty 4,” does leave WWII behind and focuses on modern warfare).
We like the original “Call of Duty” because it set the bar for WWII games real high, not only for its sequels, but for other game makers as well.";

The thing that separates “Battlefield 1942” from a lot of other World War II titles is the sheer size of the game. Up to 64 people can play at once, choosing not only what country they want to fight for (Russia, Britain, America, Germany or Japan) but what role they’ll fight as (medics, scouts, engineers and others, each with a specific duty to perform). On top of that, there are 35 different vehicles to control, from tanks to ships to planes. There’s no doubt that “Battlefield 1942” is one large-scale assault!";

If you prefer to dig into the strategy of war, then you need to play THQ’s “Company of Heroes.” The idea behind the game is that you’re in charge of an army fighting multiple fronts on a battlefield. Not only do you need to make sure that they’re fighting well, but that their supply lines aren’t broken by the enemy.
A cool part about “Company of Heroes” is its totally destructible environment. You can shoot holes in walls or even knock down a whole building. The ever-changing landscape opens up new strategic possibilities during the game, ensuring that no two battles are ever exactly the same. ";

In “Wolfenstein 3-D” you roam the halls of a Nazi stronghold, wiping out every guard and attack dog you find. You even go head-to-head against Hitler – who’s wearing a robot suit!
Unlike most games of its day, “Wolfenstein 3-D’s” action unfolded from the viewpoint of your character, giving the player the sense they’re in the heat of battle. Gamers welcomed this change of perspective with open arms, and the game’s popularity helped to create the genre now known as the “first-person shooter.” ";

Another solid WWII first-person shooter is “Medal of Honor: Frontline.” The game has a heavy atmosphere to it, due to its graphic landscapes, period-accurate weapons and the fact that these intense battles are all based on actual events. Bonus: the Xbox and Gamecube versions allow four players to fight each other simultaneously in a split-screen deathmatch.
