It was Petty Officer Bill Hawes' idea to surprise his 6-year-old son John at school. His class had been sending the Bill letters and care packages since September 2006, when he deployed to Iraq, so when Bill returned in April he reunited with his son in the middle of class.

Someone had tipped off a Seattle television station about the surprise, and the resulting video tugged at the nation’s heartstrings.

There are big families and then there are the Duggars. In August, Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar welcomed their 17th natural child into the world, and they're not ready to declare the family complete.

  • Miss USA Tara Conner got the beauty queen scandals rolling when reports claiming she had been drinking underage, tested positive for cocaine and kissed Miss Teen USA Katie Blair surfaced in December 2006. Conner kept her crown and agreed to go to rehab. When she emerged from treatment in February, she discussed her ordeal in an exclusive interview with Matt Lauer.

  • Miss Puerto Rico Ingrid Marie Rivera won her title despite applying makeup she said had been tainted with pepper spray.

  • Not many people would risk leaving almost $21 million on the table in order to get their child a few hundred miles closer to medical care that she might not even need. But that’s exactly what NBA star Derek Fisher did for his infant daughter, Tatum, who is battling a rare form of cancer in her left eye.

  • Jan Silva was almost literally born on a tennis court. That’s where his mother, Mari Maattanen-Silva, was when she went into labor. Now, nearly six years later, he’s still on the court, playing tennis the way a 5-year-old Tiger Woods once played golf — better than most adults.

  • Marc Ecko, the fashion designer and avid sports fan who purchased Barry Bonds' historic 756th homerun ball at auction for $752,000, announced that he will brand it with an asterisk and donate it to the National Baseball Hall of Fame Museum after a popular online vote.

  • Holley Mangold, a 17-year-old senior who weighs 315 pounds and can bench press 264 and squat 525, won a varsity football letter last year, appearing in 20 quarters of play as a back-up offensive lineman. She’s done it despite the initial opposition of her own father when she first said she wanted to play. At age 6, she decided she wanted to be like her big brother, New York Jets' rookie center Nick Mangold.

    It doesn’t take much to get thrown off an airplane these days, as Kyla Ebbert found out when a Southwest Airlines employee told her she was too scantily clad to remain on her flight. Ebbert vowed not to return to the airline until she received an apology...and she's still flying United.

    While Ebbert was humiliated by the incident, she said many more positives than negatives have come from the ordeal. She took the fall semester off of school to travel the country to appear on television shows, radio programs and at promotional events. And she just landed a job as a VIP hostess at the Hard Rock Cafe in San Diego.
