This might be Woody Allen’s most underrated film — it still pains me to think that neither the movie, nor Johansson or Woody, were nominated for Oscars. Caught in a crush of December releases, “Match Point” is Johansson’s finest performance to date, as a stifled and pent-up American about to marry into British money. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is a former tennis pro who doesn’t let Johansson’s impending nuptials get in the way of his pursuit, and when she succumbs to his desires, the drama plays out on a par with Woody’s best movies. Rent this one today.";

The perfect example of knowing when less is more. Johansson is a newlywed living out of a suitcase in a Tokyo hotel, lonely for companionship. Without the ability to communicate to any of the locals, she meets up with Bill Murray at the bar, and the two strike up a complex and intimate relationship, void of any sexual trysts. That’s not to say there’s no lust in “Translation,” however. Johansson’s first scene of the film, lying on her bed in her underwear, looks like the work of a Michelangelo if he was a photographer of all things stunningly beautiful.";

More of a social commentary on how younger workers are kicking highly experienced executives down the corporate ladder, Johansson plays Denis Quaid’s NYU-attending daughter. All is good for the family until Dad, up for a promotion, finds out that his new boss is sweet but wholly unqualified Topher Grace ... and literally half his age. And to rub salt in Quaid’s wounds, Grace is smitten with Johansson — though, seriously, who wouldn’t be? When they start dating, it creates family friction that’s both well written and directed by “About a Boy” helmer Paul Weitz.

Granted, Johansson only has a minor role here, but this dark and twisted tale — along with Edward Norton’s deceptive and sharp “The Illusionist” — made 2006 the year of the magician. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman are bitter rivals and constantly upping the ante when it comes to the levels of their trickery and learning each other’s trade secrets. And if that means Johansson will be play a part in their dangerous games, she’s more than willing to betray one for the betterment of the other. Be sure to keep a keen eye on every detail if you don’t want the protagonists pulling a fast one on you by the time the credits roll.";

Directed by Terry Zwigoff (“Bad Santa,” “Crumb”) and based on Daniel Clowes’ comics, “Ghost” gave Johansson her indie cred, a few years after studio disappointment “The Horse Whisperer.” Here, she and gal pal Thora Birch don’t know what to do with themselves after high school and decide to play a prank on record collector Steve Buscemi. There’s a lot of nastiness, with Birch and Johansson thinking they’re teen know-it-alls and everyone else, especially those much older, are nothing but nerds and losers. By the time the film winds up, though, they’re quick to realize that they each have a lot of life to yet live.
