Universal Studios has acquired the rights to create theme park attractions based upon Harry Potter, and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter will become part of Islands of Adventure in Orlando sometime in 2009 or 2010. The rides have yet to be announced, but there are many parts of the wizard world that are perfect for thrilling attractions, and the game of Quidditch is the first that comes to mind. While flying around on actual broomsticks is probably still technologically unfeasible, the ride could make us feel like we’re playing the game. Disney’s soaring ride lifts riders in their chairs up into a giant curved movie screen and allows them to literally soar over Florida, as the chairs move in sync with the film. Using the same technology could put visitors in the middle of an adrenaline-filled Quidditch match, complete with the actors from the films for added realism.";

The magic in the Harry Potter books is awe-inspiring, and when translated to film, it’s visually arresting. Watching magic come to life in person would be even more incredible. A live stage show themed after the Defense Against the Dark Arts class, where young wizards learn the coolest and most important spells, would place the audience in the role of students, thus opening up the possibility of audience participation. Snape is the most recent teacher of the class in the books, and he’d make an excellent star of the show, although it’s hard to imagine anyone other than Alan Rickman playing him.";

Dark rides, where guests ride through scenes in an enclosed building, are tragically not quite as popular as they once were. But Islands of Adventure has one of the most speculator and most technologically advanced dark rides, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, which takes 3D-glasses-wearing riders through full-sized sets interspersed with 3D animation and other effects, like fire and water. A similar attraction could send riders through a life-sized version of the Forbidden Forest, where they’d encounter 3D creatures — from centaurs to unicorns, thestrals to the giant spider Aragog — and other scenes from the books.";

Kids and the thrill-averse need an attraction, too, and what better than the Hogwarts Express train that transports young wizards to Hogwarts? With its opulent appearance and old-world train travel experience, it can offer a place to get out of the sun and sit down for a few minutes. After boarding at platform nine and three-quarters, passengers could snack on chocolate frogs or disgusting Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, watching out the windows as the train passes by scenes or locations from the books to add to the experience.";

A theme park isn’t complete without a roller coaster, and the Harry Potter universe offers a number of possibilities for a high-speed ride. One could be themed to have trains that match the bewitched Ford Anglia, for example. Islands of Adventure already has two coasters — Dueling Dragons — that are rumored to be part of the park that will be converted to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The two inverted coasters, which narrowly miss each other three times, could be modified to be dueling thestrals or dueling hippogriffs, for example.";
