Ent_FiveTop_061026[i-1].body = "“An American Werewolf in London,” 1981
The pinnacle of the werewolf genre, this film not only has the best transformation effects, but also the best story. When two Americans decide to backpack through the English moors, they are attacked by a werewolf, leaving one (Griffin Dunne) dead — or at least mostly dead — and the other (David Naughton) howling at the moon. He tries to fight his inner lycanthrope with the help of a pretty English nurse (Jenny Agutter). Not only is this movie scary in parts, it’s also very funny. Does it get better than the scene where the boys go to the Slaughtered Lamb and alienate all of the locals? Dunne is particularly fun to watch as he decays throughout the film.
";

Before they even have time to ponder what may have killed the men, they’re attacked themselves and try and make their escape only to find a deserted house and a zoologist (Emma Cleasby) who knows exactly what’s attacking them. When the creatures surround the house, it comes down to an all-out battle. What’s fun here is how seriously this movie takes itself, there’s no tongue-in-cheek business here. These guys are in real danger. Director Neil Marshall also made this year’s ultra-scary “The Descent.”";

Ent_FiveTop_061026[i-1].body = "“Wolfen,” 1981
This surprisingly scary movie may not be specifically about werewolves, but it’s close enough. Albert Finney — sporting hair that looks like he found someone’s discarded wig in an alley — plays a detective trying to solve a series of brutal murders. The film almost plays like an episode of “CSI” with Gregory Hines — no slouch in the bad hair department himself, sporting a big afro — on board as the forensics expert who is fairly sure those murders could not have been committed by humans. Add a slightly environmental message about the dangers of development (i.e.: you may disturb some awful angry creatures) and a little dose of spiritualism in the form of Native Americans and you’ve got your basic '80s werewolf classic. Ent_FiveTop_061026[i-1].body = "“Ginger Snaps,” 2000
The Fitzgerald sisters aren’t like the other teenagers. They enjoy “Harold & Maude”-style fake suicides and like to speculate on their schoolmates’ potential demise. But when Ginger (Katherine Isabelle) gets attacked by a mysterious creature on the same night she happens to get her first period, things begin to change. Her sister Brigitte (Emily Perkins) is torn between the need to protect her sister and the realization that she’s become a monster. The film revels in its own campiness — after all Ginger grows a tail. Like TV’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” this is all just a metaphor for growing up. If only Ginger could have hooked up with “Buffy’s” Oz (Seth Green).";

Ent_FiveTop_061026[i-1].body = "“Curse of the Werewolf,” 1961
Classic house of horror Hammer Films gives us the werewolf as tragic anti-hero. Born of a brutal prison rape, an ordinary boy is transformed into a werewolf simply because he wasn’t wanted (which seems a rather pro-Choice statement). And yes, it’s a bit crazy-making that Oliver Reed kills people by strangling them (following in the footsteps of Lon Chaney, Jr. in “The Wolf Man”), instead of using those handy claws and teeth. As with all Hammer Films, every woman featured is voluptuously overripe and ready to burst from her dress, and the dialogue is more laughable than scary. But still, particularly due to Reed (who looks rather wolfish even without his makeup), this film manages to be great Halloween fun. ";
