One friendly Valentine from Lisa Simpson and he was hooked. He started following her home, mooning after her right up until she rejected him on TV, making it possible for Bart to later \"pinpoint the second where his heart rips in half.\" Ralph, having cranked up the pain of his own crush by choo-choo-choosing a girl too nice to reject him except in a violent, pent-up rage, learned the hard way that nosebleeds and cat food do not attract the ladies. \"The Simpsons\" is a stealthily sentimental show in many ways, and its sympathy for a hopeless dweeb like Ralph is an example of its surprisingly soft heart.";

Brainy and awkward, Brian was constantly tormented by his crush on Angela, who in turn was obsessed with brooding Jordan Catalano (Jared Leto). Brian spoke for the fiery, baffled heart of young love (\"If you, like, analyze why certain people end up with certain other people, it'll make you want to kill yourself\") more than Angela's crush ever could. The saddest part of the show's untimely end may have been that it faded to black just after Brian confessed his feelings to a strangely intrigued Angela.";

Skippy nursed a sanity-threatening crush on the vapid Mallory (Justine Bateman), and her merciless and repeated rejections did nothing to cool him off. He seethed with jealousy over her boyfriends, tried a hundred ways to impress her, even managed to get himself trapped in a basement with her, all to no avail. Skippy was something of a proto-Urkel, setting a standard for daughter-chasing dweebs next door to which many would later aspire.";

Whether it was his scrubbed Minnesotan earnestness, his super-neat clothes or his swirls of product-enhanced hair, Brandon couldn't be ignored. A cautionary tale for smart girls everywhere, Andrea's prickly preoccupation probably kept her single for years, turning down prospects who might have given her the time of day. Every teen soap needs an ignored nerd. While most go the \"Dawson's Creek\" route and eventually give the poor thing her heart's desire, Andrea never got more than half-hearted interest from Brandon. This short-lived 1984 gem was the exception. As smug, scheming Matthew, he spent most of his time sparring with his mother's boyfriend. But among his side projects, the most endearing were his efforts to force his vain, shallow sister Julie to indulge the affections of his dumpy best friend Eli. While most crushes stand on their own as buffoonery, this actually brought out a less selfish -- although still sister-torturing -- side of Matthew's personality. That the show ran for less than a season while \"Yes, Dear\" continues to thrive means that Bateman may be doomed to be underappreciated in his own time.";
